T-Mobile 8320, Wi-Fi connects, but UMA doesn't...

When I first got my T-Mobile Curve (8320) and associated/connected up to my home Linksys WRT54G router (just using WEP)... I had a UMA connection, and voice/data connected just fine.
After switching from my 8800 to the Curve for day to day use, I noticed that I LOST the ability to do UMA at home... Wf-fi worked for data, but no voice capability... the Curve showed Wi-Fi logo and EDGE on the home screen..
Turns out something is the Desktop Manager Backup from the 8800 that I had restored to the Curve was causing the issue...
I didn't spend the time to trouble shoot because i'm on a BES which also does an over the air backup...
Net effect... If you are going from a previous Blackberry to the curve... Restore as little as possible to the curve... and get the rest on their via SYNC...

could that be why my uma isnt working?
I got my 8320 at the launch event. The manual tells me im supposed to go to mobile network and set connection prefernce to allow it however under mobile network there is no "conection preference option"
My friends 8320 that she got from tmo today has it.
Im coming from an 8800 anyone have an answer?

Yes, I upgraded from a Pearl and ran into the same issue. T-Mobile isn't aware of it, so I made them aware with someone from their UMA division when he called back about the trouble ticket it set up.
When you do a full restore from another device, it removed the Connection Preference option. I ran the "Wipe Handheld" tool in Security Options/General Settings, then restored only Contacts, the various types of messages, URLs, and a few other things-- Data only. There were a few options and service book entries that were copied over the first time that I left out. I'm guessing it's something non-data related.

prof, are you certain that was the fix? if so, i would like to copy your solution and post it over in the FAQs (with credit of course).
Did you do a back up first, to have the contacts to restore? Any other tips on correcting it and getting UMA back?
Seems like this might be a common question over the next few days.

I did an advanced restore and only restored the following:
Address book
Auto text
BB messenger
Browser bookmarks
Calendar
memos
messages
options
password keeper
phone log
phone hot list
profiles
profile options
sms messages
theme settings

Yes, I'm certain. The option to change connection preference appeared before the full restore, but not after. After I used the Wipe Handheld function, that preference reappeared. It stayed after doing a selective "data-only" restore.
I did a full back-up from my old Pearl, then loaded that IPD into the Advanced restore system in Blackberry Desktop Manager. I moved over only data, and not things like Service Book Entries or Options.
I spent two hours on the phone with T-Mobile last night, and I stumped them. I'm sure this is the solution.
Oh, and feel free to copy the solution to the FAQs. |

I can confirm that wiping the 8320 then manually restoring backup data works. Thanks for the quick fix!

I can confirm this works too. I switched from a Pearl to the Curve, and I initially used the Switch Device Wizard from within the Blackberry Desktop Manager, and I lost UMA functionality. Then I just backed up my Pearl, wiped my Curve, and did the advanced restore, only restoring things that I knew I needed.
It all works now and I just called the Blackberry people at tech support and told them what I did to fix it. Hopefully they can be more helpful for the next people who call (especially when Monday rolls around and they actually start advertising the Curve).

I can assure you T-Mobile Engineering does know about this problem. It has not trickled down to the T-Mobile Customer Care center.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions - I used the Transfer Device Wizard to go from my Pearl, right? When I first powered on the virgin Curve I did the on-device wizard for the basics (date/time) and poked around, and I *know* I had different options for UMA and Voice Control than what I see right now, it's almost as if the switch device wizard dumbed down my Curve to Pearl status in some regards. I'm sitting here smashing buttons going "wtf?! I swear I had a setting to *choose* whether or not to use UMA, it's totally gone now. !@^%&"
Time to reboot back to Windows, backup just the core data (address, calendar, etc.), wipe the device and do it the old fashioned way. I should've known better than to trust some dumb wizard...

Now, I'll be getting a Curve soon coming from a Pearl. Since I've already read this, all I have to do is make a backup of my Pearl and then just do an Advanced Restore and just select the items I want on the Curve correct?

I think he's referring to the initial restore to transfer his data from the Pearl to the Curve. He's not experiencing the issue now, he's trying to prevent it.
The bottom line is, if you ever use the restore feature to migrate from another BlackBerry to the 8320, you should use the Advanced function and transfer only data (address book, messages, etc). |
