Connection problem

So I got a BB 8120. I use wi-fi and it works fine. I even d/l some programs with it. The problem is some application that d/l into it said that I don't have a connection to the internet e.g. Yahoo Go!, miniopera. I have the generic data plan, not the BB data plan. So I was wondering what could be wrong with it. I can use it to surf the web and everything using my wi-fi connection.
