Where's your sense of adventure? just try them and see if it breaks anything, it's not like you can't reset them back to the defaults if they're no good for you...

Default WRT54G antennas

Haven't used a WRT54G in a while...has Linksys ditched fixed antennas for replaceable ones?

From my (now largely disremembered) CWNA course, changing antennas can increase range, might help w/battery life and keep the FCC from knocking at your door to confiscate your equipment if your neighbors complain about interference..

In the meantime, I'm off to try the recommended settings on my SMC router (with replaceable antennas).

Quick thanks to all those that take the time. Using a WRTG54 Ver 6 & would not have it working without the drops without all the advice. Changing channels seemed to make the biggest difference for me.

You can go up to a full watt of transmit power under FCC rules, so with commercially available routers, you won't have the FCC knocking at your door.

You'll likely cook your router in the process!

Default Thanks

This was a huge help. My 8120 connected fine to a netgear router given to me by my ISP but when I changed ISP's and started using my old U.S. Robotics router it would never connect too UMA. It would connect to the network just fine but it would never switch to UMA. The case with this UMA connection really seems to be in the default settings of the routers braodcasting the signals. I saw a newer post if I can find it again I will either repost your very helpful information or provide a link to this post.

I'm so glad I stumbled across this thread. I have a WRT54GL and I, too have been using alternate firmware called "Tomato". Very similar to DD-WRT in most respects. I've messed with QoS a bit and also boosted my Xmit power to 70. I looked into the settings mentioned here but I'm better with the inner workings of my engine than the inner workings of this router.

Since you mentioned this, John, I wanted to tell you I saw a picture of some guy who carved up his router a little to add a fan for cooling...

Well, I'm going to load the new 8320 OS and then start noodling with my wireless settings in this router!

Thanks all.

I too am glad I found this thread. I have been struggling with getting a stable WiFi and UMA connection on my 8320 for about 8 weeks now.

I changed my WRT54GP2 to the suggested settings and now the connections sync up immediately. Before, the sync up was hit and miss and would not stay connected either.

One other note to add though, SSID Broadcast MUST be enabled. For some reason, if you disable the SSID Broadcast, I cannot get the device to associate with the network.

My Env:
SSID Broadcast = Enabled
Network Mode = Mixed
Security = WPA (Algorithm = TKIP)
MAC Filtering = Enabled
