Default 8310 GPS slow at best?

Please Login to Remove!

Having used the 8310 (several of them) for a good week or so now, I can clearly see that the 8310 has a great deal of trouble acquiring a GPS signal, certainly compared to the much better performing GPS of the 8800..

Anyone else seeing this?

Wirelessly posted (8310: BlackBerry8310/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

My GPS is working perfectly fast. It is probably the location you are at. You must be outside for it to aquire the signal.

I have found it to be dependent on the program accessing the GPS. Though I do find it to be slightly slower then the 8800's GPS overall.

Thumbs up No Complaints

My first 8310 seemed really slow (purchased week of release). The one I have now (a few weeks old) is plenty fast.

I have noticed my 8310 to be slower than my 8800. No question. Used Telenav on both and definitely slower on the 8310.

I found that if I go to the "Options" "Advanced" "GPS" and do a "Refresh GPS" before I access any map programs I have no problem the rest of the day getting almost instantaneous positions.

You must admit, it's a bit of pain to have to do that every time..No?

Keep in mind everytime you pull the batter yor move to a distant location the GPS pretty much has to do a cold start and it takes longer the first time. Once it gets the first fix its faster after that. I don't find it necessary to do the advanced option fix.

I have been in contact with several other 8310 users, they all report the same issues...

"GPS on a mobile phone is the most useless function ever. It is very slow and horrible compared to a TOM TOM Go or similar handheld pocket GPS unit that costs half of that which the AT&T 8310 costs."
T-Mobile Chairman

I agree. GPS is sort of asking alittle too much from our phones. Next thing you know, they'll be putting atom splitters and microwave heat lasers on 'em.

My perpetual gripe has always been how come IR never worked on any handheld device I've ever owned, and I owned alot of 'em between 1997 and now.

I guess GPS will soon join the IR revolution in the historic Hall Of Shame as the top two most USELESS things cellphones tried to do.

I have to disagree. I got the phone because it had the GPS and I've already used it for numerous business trips with AmaZeGPS for the voice/map navigation and its pretty darn accurate and fast for a freebie. I don't know about you, but I'm not willing to pay for some TOM TOM and a subscription fee for something that I can get for free... Besides, most decent cars are coming with navigation built in now... what a year or two and the externals will sit on the shelf and collect dust themselves.

Just my 2cents though.

That assumes that the only reason to get the phone is for the GPS. I used to carry my 8700, and a PPC w/GPS. Maps were always out of date, tons of junk to carry. The 8310 is great. Only one device, pulling maps from the network means always having up to date maps. And the ability to get traffic info. GPS is a much more natural fit for a phone than a camera is.

Once T-Mobile gets a few more GPS devices on the market he will be singing a different tune. He is just engaging in CEO speak and trash talking the competition.

GPS is the one feature that will be in every phone very soon. It will cease to be a 'feature' and just be expected once everything is location aware.

Wifi deserves a place in that 'Hall of Shame' not GPS.
