My friend had his Bold stolen today from the gym. Is it possible to track down the phone through the BB PIN? Is there anyway to track stolen blackberries?

Definitely get a hold of the carrier to disable the device. I believe RIM is able to completely disable the device as well from being used on any network? So it would just be a useless organizer to them afterward. Doesn't help getting it back, but I wouldn't want them to get any use out of it.
Unfortunately, the best case scenario at this point is to hope your friend has the BB set to auto-lock and will therefore protect all his data. The device is truly gone, but with a backup and a new device he can recover. Then hope to find the swine with his stolen BB in hand. That thought is positively yummy! But that's just me.
I believe robotheft and gps tracker for instance require installation pre-incident. If you have the IMEI code you could have them disabled it incase they pull the sim.
Did your friend happen to pay the 4.99 for the warranty?

As others have stated, your freind should call his carrier and have it suspended. Alos, it is never advisable to track down a thief yourself, as you really don't know what you may be walking into. Report it to the police.

I'd suggest calling the police and giving them the number but leaving the phone working. If it's a brick the theif will trash it. If it's working they might try to "get some free calls." Don't call it yourself and yell at them, simply call the police and report the number stolen.
