Homescreen between the profile (upper left) and date there's a little icon with 2 circles connected at the bottom. It's always there. What is it ?

It is an icon indicating that you have unread (unheard) messages in your voice mail box.

Interesting -- it's quite possible that a lot of folks have never actually seen a "tape recorder" -- but the symbol being discussed here is supposed to represent two "reels", and the straight line connecting them is the magnetic tape being spooled from one reel to the other as a recording is made. Some of us (when we admit to our age) used to use "open reel" tape recorders all the time and find the symbol pretty recognizable. People who have only seen cassettes might not make the connection, and then there are people who've never even seen cassettes, and have no idea at all what "magnetic recording tape" and tape recorders look like...Considering that recording media generally comes down to magnetic or optical disk, or solid state memory these days, I'm guessing that there are going to *very* few people down the road who have any idea at all where the symbol came from! ....and just to complete the connection: tape recorder / recorded message, etc.

Yes -- it's used to indicate voicemail -- but this is because original telephone message recorders used to use magnetic tape to record messages...and old "Dictaphones" used mag tape as well. Magnetic tape dominated the technology used for audio recording for MANY years.

My dad used a brand name Dictaphone years ago. I think it had some kind of tape loop thing in it that would hold X amount of recording and the transcriptionist would take the unit, listen/transcribe, and then he'd record over it again. Heck, I still use a little microcassette recorder for my office dictations that she puts into a unit controlled by a foot pedal to transcribe. I now realize the icon I asked about is VM, it's just so much smaller than the one one my Pearl was. Maybe I need stronger glasses?

Looking through the Blackberry 8900 Getting Started Guide it lists a different icon for voice mail messages. I included a picture of a cut of the guide on the left which has an icon of a phone with an envelope and a screenshot of my phone on the right with the classic tape indicator. It's odd or maybe I'm just confusing something here?
