Default Newby can't connect to home network

Please Login to Remove!

Folks, please be easy on me. I'm a newby with my very first PDA, much less a BlackBerry Curve.

I just unboxed my 8320 (T-Mobile) and went through the basic configuration. I have several e-mail accounts set up and am able to send / receive e-mails without errors.

What I cannot do is get the Wi-Fi to work with my 2WIRE modem/router on my home DSL network. The model of the modem/router is a Home Portal 1000SW and I have DSL service through AT&T. The phone recognizes the network and I am able to then enter the 10-digit encyrption key for the modem. I am using WEP encryption. I continue to get a W010 error back in response.

I spent a half-hour on the phone with T-Mobile tech support and they were not able to resolve the issue. We verified my modem is working fine as I am able to use two other PCs with wireless NICs to connect to my network. We went as far as disabling wireless security on the modem but still am unable to connect. Their next suggestion was to try and locate a T-Mobile HotSpot to see if I can connect there.

What additional troubleshooting steps can I do on my own to try and figure out what's wrong (before I head down to my local StarBucks or T-Mobile store)? Is there a document somewhere that might walk me through a troubleshooting tree or something so I can narrow down the issue? I'm guessing there's a configuration issue on my modem/router but I honestly don't know where to start looking.

Thanks for whatever help you can provide.

Thanks Crazy,

I went through all the FAQs, still a no go. A lot of the FAQs where just screen shot after screen shot, nothing telling me what each screen means or what I'm supposed to do with the info. Don't know what else to do. Again, sorry for being such an idiot, but I'm simply lost.

I tried turning off security again on my modem/router and reset the BB. As before, the BB recognizes the network. But again, I get an error message, this time W002. Turned on security again, reset the BB, and I'm back to a W010 message.

I really think it's either a problem on the modem/router or perhaps WiFi is broken on the 8320.

Thanks Dave, but I alread went through all the error codes. I have to assume my 2WIRE modem/router is just incompatible. I found this thread here that describes the same problem I'm having: http://www.blackberryforums.com/wifi...i-problem.html

I've had my modem/router for four years now and it is no longer supported by AT&T/Cingular.

At this point, I think the only thing I can do is first make sure a TMo HotSpot works first. If it does, I think that pretty much rules out the BB as the problem. Hopefully I can talk AT&T into sending me a new modem/router. That should be fun.

Well, made it to a T-Mobile store today. Within 30 seconds, my curve connected up to the WiFi hotspot. At least I now know my WiFi works.

Found another thread on here in whcih folks had issues connecting to their 2WIRE-brand modem. Guess I gotta figure out how to go about replacing it.

Default Same exact problem...

hd_rider...

I've got the exact same problem. Just switched over the the Tmo Curve and I have the same DSL service and the same 2Wire 1000SW wireless router.

I know my wifi network is running fine as I can connect with two diff laptops. However, my Curve doesn't seem to like it.

Were you able to get yours up and running?

Celt,

Unfortunately, no, I simply cannot get the WiFi to work at home. Same issue as before. The phone recognizes the network (from anywhere in the house) and after entering my 10-digit key, I get either a W002 or W010 error (it seems to alternate between the two errors). I've tried using the wizard as well as trying to set it up manually but get the same results.

I've opened two support cases via e-mail, one with A&T and one with 2WIRE. I'm hoping at least one of them will come up with a real solution, whether that means a firmware upgrade to the modem/router or a replacement provided by AT&T.

Well good luck hd_rider!

If I find a solution, I'll certainly post it!

Here's one solution ... I guess.

Celt, interesting statement in the thread link posted above about needing to have the right ports open. Perhaps the 2WIRE has certain ports closed by default.

Does anyone know what ports need to be open in order for the BB to WiFi to my home network?

Well,

I just got off the phone with AT&T which was a complete exercise in futility. After talking with technical support, they determined that my current router/modem has 802.11b only. They suggested the only thing they could do was was upgrade me to a newer 2WIRE model, a 2701HG-B, which has 802.11g capability. However, they could not guarantee that the new modem would work with my BB. The tech support agent then connected me to a customer service rep, who inisisted there was nothing wrong with my current modem and if I wanted to upgrade it there would be a $90 charge. Pretty poor service considering I have the highest level of residential DSL service they provide and have been a customer in perfect standing for almost 5 years now.

So, can someone help me out with what I can do next? I imagine I need to replace my current modem/router with a new DSL modem and router (Westell?). I'd like to keep with a single modem/router combo unit rather than a separate modem and wireless router, but if I have no choice, so be it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Well,

The mysterious connection issue has been resolved and I have no doubt it was the 2WIRE 1000SW modem.

After having no luck finding a Westell 327W on eBay (at least one with the right AT&T firmware), I went to my local Best-Buy and bought a 2WIRE 2701HG-B modem/router. Once I had it hooked up, my 8320 hooked right up via WiFI within a few seconds. On a side note, it seems everything on both my desktop PC and two other wireless PCs is running noticieably faster. I had heard the newer modems perform better, but I was not expecting to actually see it.

Oh well, the modem cost me $80 but at least the issue is resolved. Maybe I can get some money back by selling the 1000SW.
