the only programs that work over wi-fi are the ones created by RIM... blackberry browser, Facebook etc... Any third party applications wont use wi-fi unless u have UMA on your network. Don't forget wi-fi in blackberries are still new and most of those third party apps were created before wifi blackberries hence they all connect using cellular data.

I would suggest you contact the developers at Jivetalk or Opera Mini to get them to include wi-fi connections in future updates. Opera Mini was designed for use on normal phones using WAP. Not many non smartphones out there have wi-fi.

Exclamation JiveTalk will add WiFi support

I emailed BeeJive a while ago regarding their lack of support for my 8820's wifi. Here's the transcript of the emails I sent and received:

I don't have any idea when wifi support will be added, but hopefully it will be soon!

Your Settings should be the following:

Transport: TCP
Advanced Connection Parameters: deviceside=true|direct=false

Try those settings and see if it works with the WiFi and your mobile settings turned off. Also if your 30-day trial is up, it might also explain why you have no connectivity to JiveTalk. But definitely try the above settings first.

i have an 8320 and am logged onto the jivetalk app was we type via my home wi-fi connection. works perfectly. i downloaded the trial from the website but later proceeded to purchasing it for $20 anyway. from my knowledge, jivetalk is the only blackberry messenger so far that supports wi-fi and will work without a data plan.

i don't know if the settings are much different, but what i had to do was just: open beejive/jivetalk > go to preferences > scroll down to networking and there should be a "wifi option" bar. at default, it is set to "mobile network preferred" which you simply switch to "wifi preferred". you should be able to log on with no problems now. (well, i've only used msn & gtalk so far.) hope it works for you.

opera mini works with me, too. didn't have to fix anything after the download.

off topic: i still can't figure out how to use the facebook app with wifi though. any ideas?
