UMA is voice dialing over IP. It uses your WiFi connection to deliver the call to T-Mobile where they add it to the terrestrial system.
Do you need a data plan - NO. Both of my kids have T-Mobile BlackBerrys without data plans, and they can use UMA. They have no other data plans.
Unless you get a special plan from T-Mobile, please note that these calls still count against your minutes. The key advantage is voice / text (for them) in areas with weak coverage, but with WiFi (like our basement).
Yes, I used to have a 8820 and seen the "uma" on the screen a couple of times but didnt know how to use it. Ordered a Bold now, so how does it work through that?
I assume it would work, right? No idea, though. I am on AT&T (and have been for many years), and so I don't have any experience with either UMA or T-Mobile.

"Wow" is now overused. Therefore, I will use "Magic bananas" instead.
It's the best BlackBerry I have owned to date. I was happy with the Bold 9000, but I always liked the form-factor of the 8900 better. The 9700 puts the best of both together, if you ask me.
