Default Smart Dialing not so smart!!!!

Please Login to Remove!

I have an unlocked AT&T curve 8310 which I am using on Rogers. I can't seem to get smartdialing working properly. What I'm trying to do is get it to add in the area code when I dial a 7 digit phone number from the home screen. I've entered the correct area code and set the country code and number length to 10. It still only dials the 7 digit number that I enter without the area code. The addition of the area code is mandatory here. This would seem to be the perfect use for smart dialing. Am I missing something?

You entered your "home" area code in the smart dialing options. The phone can't guess what area code the number you are dialing is in.

Yes, as I said, I entered the area code which is required to make phone calls in my area. It still doesn't add it to the number dialed (which is what I am assuming smart dialing is for) Has anyone actually used it? Does it work?

Default Smart Dialing

I am including a link to the Blackberry knowledgebase article on using Smart Dialing for your reference.

BlackBerry Smart Dialing

The Blackberry is good, but it is not smart enough to know what the correct area code is when you manually dial a number. If the phone number is a 7 digit number in your phone book or link in a message, it will add the Smart Dialing Area Code you specified. Otherwise, it wants you to specify what area code you are calling. In the Toronto-GTA we have a total of four area codes that may apply so you need to be careful how you use this option. I have found it easier to just put the appropriate area code with each number (all 10 digits) in the phone list or manual dial and I leave the Smart Dialing Area Code blank.

Ya, that's what I figured. Too bad! It's no big deal to put the area code in when I put contacts in the address book. The real beauty would be if I didn't have to add the 604 everytime I dial a Vancouver number. Oh well, like I said, "not that smart"!

And more and more cities are going to the 10 digit dial. Who knows, the 7 digit phone number may go the way of analog phones soon...

Also, the Blackberry has lots of inovative features and 'smart' stuff. The more you learn about how to use it, the better it will work with/for you. Just remember, it isn't perfect...
