Default How to set up calling via Wi-Fi at work

Please Login to Remove!

Hello all:

I work in the basement and do not always get a T-Mobile signal to make and receive calls on my 8300 BB. I know that we should be able to make calls using Wi-Fi but I can't seem to configure it correctly.

We have Wi-Fi in the basement but it does not allow me to call out with it. Is this something that has to be allowed by the Wi-Fi OS, or is there something that I have to configure on the BB?

Thanks

Have you enabled the wifi radio on your device? Does it show the wifi logo in the top right? Have you done a scan for networks and tried to add the wifi network? Also, is there any kind of security on the wifi network at your work?

Hi paigeg, welcome to the BBForums!
I see that you have the 8300.
Is that correct though?
Only 8320s have WiFi.

Yeah, i was just assuming since it said he had TMobile that he probably does have an 8320. Ricpac is correct, though.

I was just confused. But the 8300 appeared twice: (1) on his profile and (2) on his post.
Anyhow I hope paigeg comes back to give us the real deal.

Sorry it took so long to get back with you guys. Yes I have an 8320 from T-Mobile. I need to fix my profile.

No I have not activated the radio. How do you do that?

There is most likely some sort of security not allowing the calling via wi-fi. I am able to do it at home and using other wi-fi networks at work. Just not the business wi-fi. Can they block this fnction?

Thanks

There are many reasons why wifi at work may not work. They could require a certificate, a username and password, or they may block it altogether. I would contact your IT department and find out what is required.

I'm amazed that we can make calls via wi-fi.... Is there a tutorial for this ? Is it accessed VOIP? This could be very beneficial for me. How do I activate wi-fi radio?

Did you get a manual/CD for your device? It should tell you how to use it's basic functions like wifi. Go to Manage Connections and turn on Wifi. Then do a scan for networks and setup your wifi connection. You can only do VoIP if your carrier supports UMA.

Default 8820 in office

Newbie here and waiting for my 8820 to arrive later today

In the office, can i turn off the network/phone, connect to our office's wifi network, and just use UMA 100% of the time for phone calls in/out?

Yes, you can. As long as your office wifi is setup properly.

Default wifi

I have an AT&T 8820 and turned the radio off, connected to my wifi at work (I know the Wifi is working because I can connect to the internet). When I try to make a call it give me a dialog box that says "Restore Connectionss" or "Cancel".

Any help?

AT&T does not support UMA. No VoIP for AT&T customers.

New and first BB arrived Friday night, walked through the 101 Demo, set up H@H at home, worked flawlessly.

Today, at office, turned off mobile network connection, turned on wifi connection, got the UMA caps on my screen, made calls and worked flawlessly.

Thanks for everyone's help, can't wait to try it out on my next overseas trip!
