I am in France and i already own a Tmobile branded 8320. Now I just got a new BB8320 branded Orange FR, and unlocked it. I installed my Tmobile SIM card on it so that i can use uma and call the US without being charged for long distance, and unfortunately i am not able to get the uma signal. I verified that using my Tmobile branded 8320 will work fine on the same network.

Any ideas? Has anyone tried using a Tmobile supported device from a different provider to see whether uma will work?

Your provider also needs to support UMA. It's not enough that the device supports it. You need both pieces.

Exactly what i am doing - i am using the Tmobile US sim card in my unlocked Orange 8320 (who by the way support UMA but under a different name called UNIK in France), and connect to my wireless network at home and not getting UMA. Now If i use my Tmobile 8320 on the same wireless network at home in France, the UMA is up and running.

And to get any sort of "free calling" you need to have the Hotspot@Home service on your SIM. Be careful, as T-Mobile does not support UMA outside of the US.

Actually without the h@h uma will work but calls will be deducted from your plan and not free.

Yes, UMA will work on a TMobile 8320 overseas. I believe it's device specific and likely the other carrier's 8320 won't work.

Now i have another problem which is very wierd as i spent about 2 hours with a tmobile rep just now and which is:
Using the same WIFI network and the same tmobile 8320 device on 2 different US Tmobile sim card, i.e. 2 lines on my account. One registers UMA and works perfectly and the other doesnt, and they cant figure out why. I will get you the error under diagnostic once i exchange the SIM card again.

Look at the addresses. It's trying to get UMA from orangefrance.fr and they don't offer UMA.

I guess the device is programmed to get UMA from orangefrance.fr eventhough i am using a Tmobile US sim card. Now the question is whehter it is possible to reprogramm or change some setup so that it would use Tmobile UMA? Any thoughts?

By the way orange france has a slightly different system then tmobile, called UNIK, where it only connects to the orange hotspots, and at home it will only connect to the WIFI provided by orange and using orange as the internet service provider which sucks, because in my case i use a differetn provider and don;t want to switch because of that.

What i meant is that airtime will be deducted, but calling through UMA from france to a US destination will not be considered as long distance though the internet unless i am mistaken and i misread it somewhere on the forum.

I believe that without Hotspot@Home, calls from overseas to the US are carried at the standard roaming rate.

When the 8320/UMA first came out, the "rules" from T-Mobile were posted.

I have another problem when using 2 different US Tmobile sim card, i.e. 2 lines on my account, on the same WIFI network and the same tmobile BB8320 device on. One sim card registers with UMA and works perfectly, and the other doesnt. I spent about 1.5 hours with a tmobile rep but no luck as they cant figure out why. Here's message that i got when running diagnostics on the SIM card that does not register:

The information I have on J008.1 says that for some reason your connection was refused. The resolutions are to: battery pull to reset your device, try again, contact T-Mobile.

It also says this error is often temporary and to simply try again in a few minutes.

[Edit] Log into the T-Mobile.com account for each line you are trying to use and make sure the E911 address is updated on your profile.

Even if it is temporary, the strange thing is that with one SIM card it consistently gives me the UMA signal and with the other one nothing at all. I even wiped out the device back from scrath with restore and same problem. I will give it till tomorrow and call tmobile back and let you know the response.

I bummed out though that i cannot use my French 8320. i am going to do some research to fond out whehter i can change the configuration.

I would try putting the T-Mo sim in the Orange 8320 and then log into the T-Mobile website and have the service books resent to the device. After this you will probably need to goto the blackberry home page inside the BB browser to download the certificates so that it has them for the t-mobile servers.

My guess is that the address of the UMA server is determined by the service book sent to the device to enable that feature.

Where can you find the option of resending the service books within the tmobile site? Regarding the certificate, do you need to connect to the bb website to download? i've looked on the site but didnt find anything referring to certificate. (Sorry if sound stupid with both my questions).
