Question #1: When traveling to a hotel that has wifi wireless, they most likely do not have a router with UMA. What equipment can I get that will login to the hotel wifi and then my equipment (something I would have to purchase, not sure what) would be setup as a UMA broadcaster? Does such a thing exist? I know linksys has a unit...

Question #2: How could UMA be used when traveling to Europe and elsewhere? Once again, they problably don't have UMA wifi at hotels in euope. I must be able to setup something to use my 8320 in UMA?

How do you know they won't have UMA? So far, Sheraton and Hilton have worked fine with UMA/WiFi. As has the Continental President's Club and "free" WiFi at the Las Vegas Airport. And at a conference I recently attended.

In fact, I have yet to connect to a WiFi network that didn't support UMA.

I don't know but I'd like to be proactive in preparing. The only way to find out is by going. Calling them up and saying "Do you have UMA", whill most likely cause the response of "DUH".

What about La Quinta hotels?

My next question is, would UMA work from Europe and allow for free mins. That would really be something to be able to use the 8320 and all be part of HomeSpot when overseas.

OK - I have posted in at least two other threads what T-Mobile told me about using UMA, H@H and minutes.

There is no free lunch. Even with H@H, international calls will cost. Not as much, but they are not free.

for the most part any wifi network will support UMA, they do not need specific routers, they just need to have particular ports open and thats about it.

Seriously, I know you might be all knowing when it comes to this, but obviously we are not. It would be nice for you to be a little helpful without being so synical.

The questions are good ones - why would it cost to use UMA via wifi in another country if you are calling back home? Shouldnt it be via the internet?

Ok, so I also have a motorola SBG900 wireless surboard gateway modem, and my 8320 doesn't see UMA only WIFI on this. Are you saying I need to open a port? If so, what ports do I open up?

On my D-link DIR-625 I get UMA 3 bars strength.

With H&H if I am in the Bahamas and I use UMA over wifi to call back to the US - what will I be charged?

I asked our T-Mobile National Account Rep the same question earlier in the week and got this response:

if you do NOT have the H@H feature added, all calls made domestically are counted in whatever voice plan you are on. The same for international usage.

If you do have the feature: all calls made and received domestically through any unrestricted WiFi will be unlimited. Currently, as a byproduct of the H@H, there are advantages for international. They are as follows:

If you have the H@H feature and you are located outside the US and connected to a WiFi:

xxx61656; Calls to a US based # are not charged.
xxx61656; Calls to an international # are charged at the T-Mobile long distance rate and not the roaming rate for that country.

- Thanks. So from what you reported - I with H@H I can call via UMA wifi from the Bahamas to the USA for free - this is a huge impact, especially for us who travel internatinoally frequently.

Making outbound calls from outside usa for free really makes an impact for a lot of us.

I wonder exactly how does UMA free calls show up on the billing system? Is it live on the system? It would be interesting to see the for a factual information when someone travels outside USA and calls USA.

Just a quick tip for all you travelers, I carry a very small, portable Wireless Access Point so if I end up at a location that only has wired access, I can plug my access point in and have wireless phone and laptop access.

I use the Linksys WTR54GS I have it preconfigured for my wireless devices.
