Default do you have verizon and os 4.5? if so read this

Please Login to Remove!

need someone on verizon who upgraded to 4.5 to help me verify some problems im having...

first, geotagging doesnt work when i enable it in the camera options. after enabling geotagging you will see a little satellite icon in the lower left corner of the cameras view finder... mine ALWYAS has a red X over the satellite and i can confirm that GPS data is NOT embedded in the images. a friend on ATT has confirmed that geotagging DOES work after the 4.5 upgrade and the red X goes away.

does your red X go away? and does gps data actually get stored in the image?

second, apparently after installing VZNavigator bb maps no longer works. i had bb maps installed and gps navigation was working fine. i installed vznavigator which works fine but now bbmaps says "searching for satellites" and stays like that forever. before i uninstall vznavigator to confirm that this is the issue i wanted to see if someone else was seeing this issue.

Are you actually subscribed to the VZnavigator service... paying $10 per month to Verizon for it?

Installing VZnavigator is not enough to enable the internal GPS receiver on the 8330. The GPS receiver is locked so it can only be enabled by an active VZnavigator subscription.

People have reported that some third-party GPS applications *might* work if VZnavigator is running in the background.
Your mileage may vary.

as i said, vznavigator works just fine. but im also not sure youre right. before i had vznavigator installed, bb maps and google maps both worked fine and were able to get gps data.

can you comment on the geotagging question?

verizon locks the gps so it can only be enabled by an active VZnavigator subscription.

I am on att and have not been able to get the geotagging to work. I dont want to install bbmaps.

The short answer is... it's not supposed to work.

Using the internal GPS receiver, the only GPS application that should work on a Verizon 8330 is VZ Navigator with an active subscription at $10 per month. Nothing else should work... not Google Maps, not BB Maps, not Geotagging, etc...
Like I said... those other apps *might* work to some degree if you leave VZnavigator running in the background when you try to use them.
If they don't work for you, then that's normal, because they're not supposed to work.
If they do work, then you're lucky.

jjd, are you sitting at your desk trying the camera/gps feature?

Walk outside in clear view of the sky. Open the camera and give it a few seconds to lock on to the satellites. IF you have VZW Navigator subscribed, it should lock on and the red X should go away.

If not, open VZW Navigator and leave it running in the background. Then try the camera again, giving it a few seconds to lock on the sats.

I know I used to think the geo-tagging on the camera would not work because I don't have BBMaps loaded to my device. Sitting here at my desk, it never would.

But this past week I was in a VERY rural area of Montana with no cell signal, no data on my BB or anything. I was taking pictures of the scenery and family fishing, etc., and I noticed my geo-tagging red X was no longer there.

I just now walked out of my office and tried it again, and the red X is gone as long as I am in an area in which my BB can see the satellites.

Good luck.

Google Maps works just find though it does NOT GIVE SPOKEN DIRECTIONs, though it will get you where you need to go...the only annoying thing is your location is approximated within 1700 METERS! LOL.

I do not have VZW Navigator they get enough of my money already!

I believe both bbmaps and google maps will use a less accurate triangulation method based on cell towers if a GPS signal isn't available. That's likely what you saw with them both "working fine" before you had VZNavigator installed and operational.

(jsshapiro - that's exactly what you're seeing with that accuracy - the cell tower triangulation that google maps will use if it can't get a GPS signal)

This thread is not about which GPS application is best for directions. Please re-read the OP again.

Just tested it and it worked wonderfully. Red x went away within 10 secs. However, I couldnt see any details as to the location of the picture. I assume I need bbmaps for this?

silly question: once vznavigator is running how can i switch to the desktop to load the camera? there is no "switch application" on the menus once vznavigator is loaded. is there a shortcut key or something i can use?

Just hit the red key (end call) and it will still be running in the background.

Remember to close it completely later.

Alternately, "alt-esc" will work, similarly to "alt-tab" in windows. "esc" being the key to the immediate right of the track-ball.

Or "alt-wheel click" on thumb wheel devices.

I have VZW but don't have Navigator. I can confirm that my geotagging does not work with the built in GPS. But it DOES work when I use my BT puck (Freedom Keychain).
