I still think this one is very strange if you are unable to receive...

do you get a tone when people send things to you?
Date/Time set correctly?

try sim in old phone does that work?

No tone, yes on time and date, and I haven't switched the sim, simply because I am able to receive/send voice calls just fine, so I don't think it's a sim problem

Just to be clear... Did you pull the battery with the phone powered on? If you shut the phone off before the battery pull it does nothing. If you did, make sure you are getting good signal where you are trying from. I get the red x that means it did not send when I am in a bad location.

Yes did pull the battery out with the phone on

I've also tried sending from multiple bar strengths from full bars down to only 2

And I've never gotten a red X ... but get red checkmarks instead.

Strange... I've never seen the red check mark either. Have you tried sending yourself a text to see what happens? It may just be time to contact AT&T cuz I think you've gotten most of the tips for fixing it. Not sure it would help this problem but you can go into Options> Advanced Options>Host Routing Table then hit the menu key and Register Now to see if something just isn't hittin on the network.

Make sure your friends are using your 10 digit number and did you try sending one to yourself? Very wierd that you get the Reg. Message but nothing else.

Yes they are using the 10-digit, and I've tried sending to myself both from my blackberry and also At&t's online 'send text' feature and don't get anything

Well hopefully AT&T can solve it cuz I'm out of ideas. What about MMS have you tried an MMS message to or from someone?

It sounds like AT&T has an issue with it, did you look at your account online to see that you really do have it? You can try changing the plan to see if that helps.

Normally with AT&T if you don't have a plan you still get SMS it just cost you 25 cents per message.

I had a similar problem but it was after upgrading the OS to a beta 4.5.0.42 and on Tmobile. My incoming SMS wouldn't work and I never confirmed if outgoing was ok. The only way I could fix it was to take the SIM and put it back into my Motorola Razr. Then the SMS I was expecting would come through. If I put the SIM back in the Curve it would then get SMS ok. It was only a problem with a couple of the beta OS. The stock OS was fine as have been later versions.

So there was something that kind of unstuck if I put it back in the Razr. If you have your old phone, might be worth a try before you talk to AT&T.

True but I was thinking that it is on their end and looking on the web site might see something and changing the plan might force a fix on their end. it is an issue on their end.
