Default Do I only have BES?

Please Login to Remove!

I've done a search but can't seem to find the answer to my question:

I noticed this prior to upgrading the OS to 4.5 last night but the problem didn't change. I'm reading all kinds of threads dealing with e-mail setup and going to the Setup Wizard and clicking on E-mail Setup and then entering in the addresses you want to use, etc., etc. But, on my 8320, when I go to E-mail Setup, I'm only given two options: Setup a BES account or Skip the E-mail Setup.

So, I guess my question is: Do I only have BES configured on my phone? Where do I find the BIS stuff? 'Cause, for the life of me, I have searched everywhere on this device and I cannot find a THING about being able to setup an HTML or other type of e-mail.

And I'm reading all kinds of success stories from folks who have T-Mobile and have successfully setup Hotmail accounts but, again, I have no functionality to do that anywhere.

Help? Thanks!

You would probably know if you were using a BES account.

What data plan do you have for your Blackberry from T-Mobile?

Oh, I know I'm not USING a BES account. But it appears that that's the only e-mail functionality I have. That's what I don't get....I can't find anything for BIS anywhere on this device.

(...looking for my receipt to check data plan....brb)

Okay, my receipt doesn't detail the plan I upgraded to and the T-Mobile website only tells me, "Because of the nature of your T-Mobile account, you are unable to change your plan or services online. To make changes, or if you have questions, please call Customer Care toll free at 1-800-937-8997 or by dialing 611 from your T-Mobile phone."

Also, since the T-Mo billing site is always a month behind, it still shows me as having the T-Zones $5.99 bundle rather than the service I just upgraded to. Just tried calling the store that I bought the phone at but nobody's answering. So I guess I'm stuck out in lack-of-information-land. :(

edit: Just remembered something: The day after I bought the phone, I received a text from T-Mobile stating, "We made the change you requested to your account effective Jul 29 08. Visit blah-blah-blah for details on your current plan." So does that mean that the data plan I upgraded to won't actually be available to me until the 29th? 'Cause everything else with the phone, messaging and web browsing seems to be working fine....

The t-zones plan will do nothing for your Blackberry device so make sure that is removed from your account if it's not already.

It sounds to me like you do not have an active Blackberry data plan at the moment which explains why you are not able to set up any BIS email accounts.

You can either wait to call the store (who will probably just refer you to T-Mobile technical support) or you can call technical support now to get your account sorted out.

Thanks, Dave. I guess that would explain the vague text message referenced above. Looks like they probably post-dated the changes to my account to the 29th so I'll just sit patiently until Tuesday and see what happens then. If I still don't have the service, I'll give 'em a shout.

It'd be nice if they could program their automated dialer service to recognize WHAT changes were allegedly made to an account rather than just WHEN they go into effect. Then people like me wouldn't be clogging up their customer-service lines and independant message boards like this looking for help.

Thanks again!

I don't see any reason for you to wait... it usually shows within a a couple hours if you do have it.

I agree with JSanders. Don't wait, call T-Mobile technical support now.

Wirelessly posted

Jeremy,
Use the desktop icon called Manage Internet Email to setup a Hotmail account. The Setup Wizard does not offer the internet email option as I recall.

Hi Tank,

Thanks for the suggestion and, please, don't take this the wrong way but, if it was that simple, I wouldn't be here asking for help. That's just what I'm saying: I don't have any icons for internet e-mail or anything else like it. All I have is BES setup.

Anyhoo, I'll call T-Mobile when I get to work in a couple hours. I don't have time to go on hold for an hour right now....Thanks again for all the suggestions, guys! I'll update when I get an answer from T-Mobile.

You can generally set up BIS via your carrier's BIS site. With TMO, assuming you have a BB data plan, log into their site and click on the link to set up Blackberry email.

To answer your first question: No, you don't only have BES. Every properly provisioned BlackBerry has access to BIS. BES is extra functionality at extra cost. If you don't have BIS access, your device isn't properly provisioned. As others have said, you need to contact TMo to fix that.

Okay guys, thanks for all the help here. The problem turned out to be what I suspected: T-Mobile didn't upgrade my account services until 0200 this morning. Once the upgrade went through, I received a flurry of messages, new service books and several new icons on my device. I was able to setup Hotmail and a new BlackBerry e-mail address.

Thanks again!
