Thumbs down Blackberry 9900 and T-Mobile nightmare!

Please Login to Remove!

Sorry to be a killjoy here, but i returned my Blackberry 9900, for a full refund of my $600.00, after spending six hours with both T-Mobile Blackberry support and Research In Motion tech support. This device and its 7.0 software are definitely not ready for prime-time. Maybe at some point in the future they will be, but not at this point. I returned the 9900 for a refund because:

-There is no "Wi-Fi Calling" (UMA/GAN functionality), and neither T-Mobile nor Research in Motion can make any firm commitment on if and/or when the functionality might become available on the 9900.

-17 of my most important Apps are not available for the 9900, including Research in Motion's own Blackberry Protect, Pandora, CNN, Delta, British Airways, Shazam, etc. Neither T-Mobile nor Research in Motion had any idea if and/or when these popular Apps might become available for the 9900.

-Despite the fact that T-Mobile sells the Blackberry 9900 in their stores, they do not make the software available on their site. When the software becomes corrupt with Java errors as it did in my case, there is no way to reload the Blackberry software. Research in Motion will not offer replacement software if the carrier does not make it available to their customers. T-Mobile does not yet offer it on their site. What that means is that T-Mobile customers who have corrupt software on their 9900 are simply out of luck!

After more than six hours of working with both companies, we simply gave up. I returned the 9900 for a full refund. For the first time I am looking at Androids and iPhones....

What Android phone supports UMA calling? I haven't heard of one yet on any carrier, let alone T-Mobile.

Lack of app availability is a regular part of being an early adopter. Research before buying helps eliminate this disappointment.

As for updated software releases, you don't need a T-Mobile version to install it on your BlackBerry. You can install any version released for the 9900 model no matter what carrier released it. How do I upgrade the OS on my BlackBerry? - BlackBerryFAQ

Can't expect to be on the bleeding edge of technology hardware wise and have the software people be right in line with their development. Look at when Windows Vista came out sure it was pretty but did your printer drivers work? Nope sure didn't. Just have to give them time, look at Dropbox took them a few weeks but they got it working with OS 7.

And no problem with BB Protect on my OS 7 9810. Sounds to me like you did not do your research on the device before you bought it.

For what it's worth, Protect IS ON the T-Mobile 9900.

Not having UMA is a serious negative, and knowing it will likely be later than sooner doesn't help.

I would like to have the Delta app, but I will use the mobile web site 'til then.

Otherwise, I'm making do. I knew what I was getting into.

It's like people have no recollection of or experience with PC's and new OS's. I can't believe all the whining about apps not working on OS7. What do they expect on a brand new OS? (well, maybe not BRAND new, but enough of an upgrade to make many apps break)...

Don't know about PC's. I am still on XP and did not start until it had been on the market for a while. But it is certainly true of BlackBerrys and should not be a surprise except to the greenest noob: Apps and themes and such do lag the OS release. I wish it were not true, but it is a fact of life.

However, every RIM app I was using before is available on the 9900, if not pre-loaded. Plus what used to be the premium Doc's to Go, Ooh Rah!

Aw shucks, I thought Pandora was just my inability to find the download. I did kill my Tour streaming Pandora on I-75 though, so I have mixed feelings about it...

Did anyone else noticed our thread host registered in less than 5 days and just 1 post above just to explain his plight?!

Did this user NOT even try reading the boards before purchasing? I don't wanna say the "T" word that ends in "L" but if its not one of those you would think even a reply would be nice. But $600 is $600 and RIM NOT ensuring:

1. All providers have the firmware that they've accepted ready to be uploaded on their sites and their tech reps to KNOW where its located is bollocks!! Bad business.
(Mr Kirkup would NOT approve of this sham).

2. Work with developers OPENLY to quickly update their apps in a stable manner.

Common RIM THIS is the BB that we've been waiting for and the apps to be updated is CRITICAL! OPENGL sweet, 1.2Ghz CPU THANK YOU, but without the full gambit of apps to fully enjoy this beast you leave a bad taste of experience in end users hands. Unfortunately they remember this and all too well.
