Default Water damage - extremely weak signal

Please Login to Remove!

Hi there,

I'm a new BlackBerry user and I'm wondering if you could kindly help me. Three weeks ago, I received a Bold 9000 which was accidentally placed in the washing machine (along with a blanket) a few days before. Before the phone was given to me, it was dried and in working order. Up until the past couple of days, I've been using the phone without any problems.

Now, the phone does a horrible job with picking up my carrier's signal. When I'm indoors, I would get no reception at all ("No Service") when I would get reception using any other handset. When I'm outdoors, I would get either "No Service" or 1 bar of reception. Once in a blue moon, I will get full reception, but that does not last long. I've tried reinserting my SIM and turning the handset on and off, but nothing would fix the reception issue.

The water damage sticker (visible after removing the battery) is red.

Even though it was a gift (it was decided that the phone would be a gift BEFORE accidentally placing the phone in the washer), I'd still like to continue using my BlackBerry. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There is probably nothing you can do. I would say there is nothing you can do, but there's always some amazing story of recovery, or someone will come along with a miracle story. So, except for a miracle, the BlackBerry is on its deathbed. That's the thing with liquid exposure: if it doesn't kill the device outright, corrosion sets in and it eventually does kill it.

If you do catch a BlackBerry in time and it was just water, remove the battery right away, and dry the device very, very good (usually by nearly a week in dry rice), there is a high chance of recovery. But your situation isn't so good.

Wish I could give you hope. Sorry.

Most likely goner. Water and cell phone electronics do not mix at all.

Thanks aiharkness and Dubdub. I had the feeling the phone was on the decline also.

What do you think about replacing the antenna/radio (assuming it has been damaged)?

Not worth the trouble and expense, in my mind. Unless you have parts and you want to play and learn. Don't pay to have the device fixed. It's totaled.

I agree with aiharkness. Put the money toward a new device. Trying to fix a water-damaged device is a kin to throwing your cash away. You might get lucky and get a short term fix, but then something else will short out and more problems will develop.
