Yes, they are annoying as heck. But they are meant to be used when you absolutely have to hear the phone [e.g., when in a loud environment] or as alarms when you absolutely have to get up.

Bonus Tip: When I need the alarm to absolutely get me out of bed I pick one of those loud ones and leave the phone in another room. It's a bad way to wake up, but it works. Only danger is one wanting to throw the Pearl against a wall. Luckily I never have had a problem getting up with an alarm, so this procedure is more out of caution. Good for those of you who might press snooze once too often.
