Your thoughts on recent events in Iran are solicited. Is this a new revolution in the making? What, if anything, should the Great Satan do?

I think the official US reactions have been less than underwhelming.
Who are you saying the Great Satan is?

Pretty sure he was referring to what the ruling party in Iran calls the US.

What can we do except watch? It's a very complicated situation. They call themselves a democracy. That's not apparent with these latest troubles. It looks clear that there were voting irregularities. Is another Tiananmen Square in the making?

I should remember that tongue in cheek comments can not be conveyed well on these boards. Mriff is correct; that is the term used by the ruling religious elite to refer to the United States.

My thoughts exactly. But will it ultimately lead to a democratization of the country?
As for what we can do -- I'm sure some will say we should turn it into a sand pit. McCain made a good point today in that perhaps the best we can do is continue to be a beacon for freedom. Not great for the short term, but...

Invading Iran would be a tragic mistake.

I feel like this thread is a little light in the "hugs & kisses" comments.
I agree with both of you about invading. There is a right place and time for warfare and this is a bad time. What is more likely however is an assassination. Plenty of those have been done without public US ties.

Well, let's wait for the schoolyard bullies to make their appearance, Hugs and kisses comments will almost certainly be forthcoming from the peanut gallery.
Are you thinking US sponsored assassination, or one that they try to pin on the US? I could see both.

I could see both as well. Few Americans like to think of the number of people the CIA has killed over the years. In this situation I think its a long shot, the US does not want to be blamed for anything in Iran now. But perhaps helping a dissenter make something happen could be done.
And this again leads to paranoid dictators. The reach of the CIA is global and if you are not a friend of the US then you fear the CIA the same way the US feared the KGB during the cold war.

How much of a lesser evil is the other guy? Are we better off demonizing the current leader?

Neither leader has control of much. The Supreme Leader is in control.
Politics of Iran - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Supreme Leader
Main article: Supreme Leader of Iran
Although he remains aloof from the competition of politics, the most powerful political office in the Islamic Republic is that of the Supreme Leader, of which there have been two: the founder of the Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, and his successor, Ali Khamenei.
The Leader appoints the heads of many powerful posts - the commanders of the armed forces, the director of the national radio and television network, the heads of the major religious foundations, the prayer leaders in city mosques, and the members of national security councils dealing with defence and foreign affairs. He also appoints the chief judge, the chief prosecutor, special tribunals and, with the help of the chief judge, half of the 12 jurists of the Guardian Council xxx8211; the powerful body that decides both what bills may become law and who may run for president or parliament.[9]"

Will Neda become the contemporary equivalent of the man who confronted the tanks in Tiananmen Square?
Neda Soltan’s Death Inspires New Site - Digits - WSJ
Even if she does, the results will probably require the long reach of history (20+ years) to be realized.

You're probably right. The drama doesn't seem to be quite the same, but then I'm an old fart now (older fart??).

It may well turn out to be a more propitious moment. Depending on if and how the government changes in Iran. I feel very sorry for her family. According to the news reports, her father held her as she died.

We're already occupied with Iraq/Afganistan, and N Korea is pulling on our chain. The turn of events in Iran is a much welcomed development. We need to put forth a greater effort behind the scenes to help the Iranian people and to undo Iran's nuclear progress. Otherwise, we will become more directly engaged with Iran in the future, whether we like it or not. Selective Service will go from 18-25 to 18-45 real quick.
Obama needs to not only step up the rhetoric, but put actions behind those eloquent words on the teleprompter.

I'm glad your not in power Samuel. Not sure how being occupied in two wars and dealing with N. Korea really means that this new in Iran is a "much welcomed development"? LEt them sort out their govt., we have more than enough on our plate atm.
