how do transfer apps and pics from a Mac?

Is it possible to download apps onto a Mac and then transfer them, either using Pocketmac or by some other method? I want to buy some games, but have no idea how much the download sizes are on my BB....don't want to use up my monthly allocation of 6Mb all in one go! So i figured downloading on the Mac would be a much better idea.
And how do i transfer mps files and pics from my Mac? Is there anything i should know about file formats and sizes?
