Default Is "Tethering" the Storm an additional charge or free?

Please Login to Remove!

Can someone clarify this for me because I am getting conflicting information?

Is it possible to tether my blackberry storm without paying an additonal $15 to Verizon? I would only use this when my internet is down so I will not purchase this service.

However, I have a co-worker telling this is included if I have the unlimited data plan. That seems to be contrary to everything I am reading which says you have to pay Verizon an additional $15 per month.

Apparently, there is a free app on blackberry world?

Please let me know how this works. Thanks.

You have to buy the software for $49. Is there any free tether app?

You want fries with that? Everyone wants free stuff but let me (and everyone else) know what you find and how to avoid the data caps and VZW fees.

To the best of my knowledge, there are no free options. If you want to play like a sport.....

In the past, I paid the $15 a month to Verizon. I found I did not tether a lot and so I purchased Tether ($49) and it works well. Subsequently, I dropped the $15 monthly plan with Verizon.

Now, on to the legal issue at hand. If Verizon discovers that you are using the handheld as a modem and not paying the $15/month, you can be held liable for the data useage. This type of data useage is not included in the $44.95/month Unlimited (5GB) Blackberry data plan. That is why they charge the additional tethering fee. I use it sparingly (only when I have the need) and I have never had a problem. But that chance always exists.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

Thanks for letting me know.

Once the blackberry storm is tethered to a laptop, can the phone still be used to send/receive phone calls?

No. With Verizon, voice and data cannot run simultaneously.

Having problems getting Tether to work in XP. Can I just install the drivers or do I have to load the entire Desktop Manager software? That slows down my system considerably.

Please let me know. Thanks.

You should only need the drivers. I would think Windows Update would install them automatically when you first connect the device. If not, you can try to simply google "9XXX driver" and see what comes back.

angelot,

Have you tethered yet? I tried it briefly and didn't care for it. However I have access to Wifi every 100 yards in Orlando so it really isn't necessary locally. When I travel I use hot spots and pay for access when I need it. It works out cheaper for me that way.

If you haven't tethered, the below video shows you step by step how to get a free trial for Tether. Try it before you pay for the service. You may find it works for you but the video is helpful.

Default so I didn't get it...

Can we tether for free or not?

I canceled my wireless card because I thought I could tether for free.

InfoProdigy,

you can get a free trial period with Tether. Then purchase the full version for a $49 flat fee. After that there is no cost associated with Tethering.

However, a Scassel noted, if you start killing it regularly VZW could come after you for the data usage. If it is occasional usage, I wouldn't sweat it. But if you are burning up the internet with the Tether daily, then I suggest you pay the $15 monthly fee.
