My company pays for my Blackberry and has a contract with Nextel so that's what I've got to work with. Are there any rumors of a 7100 being available for Nextel subscribers?

Should I just bite the bullet and "settle" for the new 7520?

No, 7100's are GSM, Nextel doesn't use GSM (neither does Verizon or Sprint)

Nextel is iDEN. Verizon and Sprint are CDMA.

Don't know what happens after Nextel and Sprint consolidate....

In a meeting I had with our Nextel Account Team before the merger, they told me their management team was impressed with the 7100 form factor. He had no dates, but told me he wouldn't be surprised if theu had a 7100 in 2005.

Since Sprint is the last kid on the BlackBerry block - and on CDMA - I am not hopeful....

I have heard rumors as well as a 7100 version for nextel. No idea on a timeframe though

The 7510 has a module that looks like 1970's CB hardware on the back.

if they stay with nextels direct connect instead of sprints ready linc than i would expect it to be quite a bit bigger. if you have ever taken apart a nextel you would notice that there are actually two seperate boards one for the cell side and another for the direct connect side. that is why there phones tend to larger than most. while ready link uses voice over ip this allows them to use the existing data connection and thus the phones are smaller. it all depends on what they choose for their radio service as to whether or not we will see a 7100 anytime this year... doubt it as ready linc sucks compared to direct connect.

I think eventually they will merge somehow. VOIP to DC or something. With a high speed 3G network, they could tunnel DC over it and at the end point convert it to iDEN DC, 3G DC, or sprint's CDMA thing.

from rumors i have heard through the "rumor mill" and some research I have done....Nextel owns the patent to the new DC on the CDMA2000 network it will be completed in 2 yrs at the least and at that time sprint and nextel will go to the new network which leaves iden customers like myself having to buy a new phone dont expect a 7100 from nextel until the new network is ready for nextel and sprint to both use

What you said about the boards is not actually true the two boards are the mainboard and then the keypad. the direct connect and phone are both on the same board.

Yeah, but ready-link SUCKS. it has anywhere from a two to six second lag on connection, and about a three to four second delay from speak to spoken. It is not nearly as reliable, either.

Also - the two boards are not separated into "cell" and "DC." The reason MOST have two boards is because they had to have a keypad, and had too much circuitry on the board to allow that.

If you look at Nextel's current line, which includes 13 different models, only FOUR have two boards. Three of those are the i710, i730, and i530. ALSO - one of the "two-board models" is the Blackberry. All Nextel's other phones (not including older models) use only one board.

Here's my opinion: Sprint payed the 38 billion smackers or whatever amount to merge with Nextel. I believe what will actually take place is that Sprint will have features similar to Nextel's DC, using the same system, and Sprint's and Nextel's customers will be able to communicate with each other.

Supposedly people that have Sprint are being told that they will have the opportunity to talk to Nextel customers (obviously through DC) within the next to months...(in Floriday). And rumours are that folks in New York, and similar cities already have the capabilities in limited release. More rumours?

I do not believe the new models also have a single board, minus the i836. What I think will happen is sprint will use nextel dc and nextel will use sprint voice, which will now allow us to roam onto vzw network and what not. I also think data wise we will push into the cdma market.
