When attempting to download your items, what is your service status? (GSM, gprs, GPRS, edge, EDGE, x, OFF, SOS).

edge (in lowercase letters means no data) You want to see EDGE (in uppercase letters).
Also, you will want to have a BlackBerry data plan, a generic data plan doesn't give you all the features that the BlackBerry data plan does.

You need a BlackBerry data plan or a BlackBerry add-on to your data plan. The standard carrier data plan will not give you BlackBerry data services.
