Default Is it possible to spy on Blackberries?

Please Login to Remove!

In another forum of news and current events it is claimed that security agencies are concerned about President O'Bama having a blackberry. Why? Because the microphone of the blackberry can be turned on remotely, allowing those who wish to "listen in" on whatever is taking place within microphone's reach. Telephones which are ISDN compliant can also be remotely taken "off the hook" to provide similar benefits.
Anyone know if this is true that a blackberry microphone can be turned on remotely? I am doubting this myself.

oddly enough, it must not be true as it appears the AP is reporting that President Obama will be keeping his BlackBerry.

Either it is a secure device or his staff will not be allowing the President in any high level confidential meetings.

Anything is possible. The real question is how easy is it? No very IMHO.

It's not possible without 3rd party software unless your talking about logging email, pin msg's, browsing. 3rd party software must be installed physically on the device.

I think it possible and I also think my wife is doing so to my phone now.....

Curious as to how, but yeah I do think it possible to spy of these phone......

If someone backed up your phone and then restored it to another phone, wouldn't they in essence have all or get all of your email and txt info(including passwords.....)

Obama is keeping his phone after a $36XX software upgrade for security purposes that was designed by NSA. So I'd say it is possible!

Augustus - protect your BB with a password. Then someone won't be able to backup the device via DM and therefore restore to new handheld without the pwd. Choose a good password, and they only have a limited number of chances to get the pwd before the BB will self-destruct (i.e. wipe itself)

Wirelessly posted (wap! woop woop!)

Yep. Plus the added bonus that the pwd attempts count can't be reset, even with a power-off. So you'll know whether someone's had a crack at the password.

of course there is a difference about "what is possible for normal people" and "what is possible for president". clearly it would be hard to impossible for "normal people" to have their mic turned on. when you are talking about "president" of course someone could figure out a way to turn the mic off and on without actually being on a call.

This makes no sense... merely a subjective opinion not based on fact. What is possible for normal people and what is possible for the president, in this context, are exactly the same. It just depends on who is attempting to access said device, and their technical abilities (and patience!)

Allow me to make sense of it for you.

First off - clearly its my opinion! Just like if I said "Starbucks coffee tastes good". I dont need to back it up with facts because thatst not how opinions are given.

When I say "is possible for normal people" I am talking about "who is attemptiong to access said device" if said device is owned by "normal person". (Then the same for "president".) I didnt think I would actually have to type that out; I figured people would know that is what I was saying. (But online the target audience is vast, and often there are language barriors.)

Anyways, hope that clears the confusion!
