When do you need Internet Tethering rather than Blackberry Bridge?

I've been Bridging my new Playbook to my Bold 9700 since I got it. Since I've been using the Bridge everything has been working fine, I can surf to any website I desired, so I didn't even know about Tethering. I assumed that Tethering was just a general system for non-Blackberry phones to connect to the Playbook, while Bridging was for Blackberry to Playbook.
Recently, I was attempting to setup some new email addresses to the Playbook, and it said that it couldn't do it till I enabled the Internet Tethering option. The tethering would occur to the same Bold 9700 anyways that it is currently Bridged to. So when is Tethering is required rather than the Bridge?
