Default How does RIM check license use on BB Enterprise Server

Please Login to Remove!

Does anyone know how does RIM check for license violations on a BB server?

Do they poll the server? Does a service or process on the server send information up to RIM?

I have a customer who has x number of handheld licenses but has WAY more handhelds on the server. My company is trying to tell him and warning him that he could be shutdown and/or fined and that he should buy the licenses so as not to be in violation of any agreements with RIM. He is convinced he could keep going as is and continue to add new users and handhelds without buying them.

Anyone else come across this issue? This customer does not believe anything bad is going to happen.

Unfortunately, your customer is most likely correct.
RIM is pretty passive when it comes to CAL compliance, especially for older versions of BES.
I've never heard of a case where they actively check for client licensing compliance at all, other than the SRP itself.

Sucks, actually.

Thank you very much penguin3107. I was hoping that was not the case but was expecting it. I think the customer knows this too as they just won't budge. He does have an older BES server but I don't remember the version at this time. I do know that on my company's own BES, I can't add a handheld without a adding a license.

If they ever get around to auditing his system, he'll get a nice whopping bill for the CAL's he's using. Failure to pay would probably result in RIM shutting down his ENTIRE system. Theft of services and all that.
