For anyone who is still waiting on AT&T Communication Manager, you don't need it. I am using a USB connection and the following settings: Use your mobile phone number for the account number and the last 6 digits of your phone number as your password. I have attached screen shots of the Network and Advanced Modem settings. Use Sierra for the vendor - after several hours of trial and error I found that this works perfectly!

PS : I just wrote on APN : "internet" because for avea in Turkey it's this one.. but changed nothing else.. And i wrote my number with the 0 before, exactly like someone would do to call me in the same country.. normal number in other words..

No no... logically you'll see, when you will plug your blackberry, when you will open "network" in the preferences panel, your device will be added.
If it's not the case, go to get Balckberry Desktop Manager for Mac (->google) and I guess the driver is inside..

What about tethering through Bluetooth?

The identical instructions Matocky gave to initiate this thread work for tethering via Bluetooth. The difference is that instead of connecting BB to MAC via USB, you have to set up BB as Bluetooth device in MAC. The go to Network Preferences and follow identical instructions as for tethering via USB.

As for device drivers, just go to blackberry.com and download the Blackberry Desktop Software for MAC. Connect BB to MAC, and if Desktop Software recognizes it, which it should, the it should be all set up for tethering.

I can only get the Blue tooth working, but would prefer USB since the Bluetooth mode drains the battery and disconnects very often. I just get a failure to connect message.

I was a tad confused at first but your pictures helped clarify. So anyone else that may be a little confused as I was,

Account Name: your 10 digit #
Password: last 6 of your phone#

I had to have BBDM running for OSX to recognize my USB device and authenticate my BB password.

Thanks to the OP for getting me down the right path. There are so many suggested passwords/usernames out there...it is confusing.

I found the above works..ONLY IF YOU HAVE ATT UPGRADE YOUR BB SERVICE FOR TETHERING. I put the settings in, but didn't work...until I called ATT C/S and upgraded..then it was a go.

Also, I called C/S and asked for their set up. So this also works too:

1. No need for using phone number for account name, nor using last six digits for password. You can, i did, but not necessary.
2.Telephone number (screen 1 above) should be *99***2# , but *99***1# works also.
3. Sierra works, but ATT recommends to chose (second screen shot):
Vendor: Research in Motion
Model: Blackberry IP Modem (GSM)
4. CID should be 2. But I could only get 1 to stick. 1 works fine.

This is for using Bold 9700 with Mac OS Snow Leopard and ATT via USB. Using BB Enterprise ($45) plus Tethering (another $15). It should work with any BB. Also works for BB personal ($30) plus Tethering (another $30). Yep, they both equal $60. But you can add/drop tethering on a prorated monthly basis for either. NO COMMITMENT. Gives you 5Gb per month. Works great for occasional usage.

RIM BlackBerry smartphones may be used as a modem on Mac computers via BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

Prerequisites
An AT&T LaptopConnect rate plan is required to use the device as a modem. For assistance with rate plans please contact Customer Care.
BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac.
Verify that the device indicates that wireless data service is available.

Procedure
Access BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the Mac computer via USB cable.
Verify the RIM BlackBerry device displays as "connected".
NOTE: A green icon will appear next to the device icon.

PS: Works the same above for CDMA BB phones. Just in Advanced settings chose CDMA instead of GSM. Call Verizon for account name, telephone number, password.

Hi All,

I did some speed testing. I'm getting much better speed using Sierra (as vendor). Using RIM gave me about half the speed.
I used Speakeasy Speed Test for testing.

I'm not sure why this is - am I the only one seeing this?

It's as if using RIM (as vendor) only gave me EDGE speed where Sierra gave me 3G speed.

Sierra:
Download Speed: 1621 kbps (202.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 354 kbps (44.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

RIM:
Download Speed: 668 kbps (83.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 356 kbps (44.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
