Default 8100 as BT Modem--Works for a few mins then disconnects

Please Login to Remove!

I'm using the Blackberry 8100 modem script from Fibble.org to connect to the internet on my PowerBook G4 with my Pearl on T-Mobile. Everything seems to work okay for a few minutes (I get around 160 Kbps downstream), but then the connection seems to silently drop, and I'm unable to access the internet anymore. "Internet Connect" doesn't automatically disconnect and there's nothing in the connection log suggesting a disconnect.

My connections last anywhere from 1-7 minutes before they stop working. Can anyone help with this issue? Any assistance is much appreciated. I'm running OS 10.4.7 on my Mac.

I tried the following directions on Fibble, but they don't seem to make a difference.

in System Preferences -> Network? click the ‘Configure…’ button. Click the ‘PPP Options…’ and verify the settings are the following:

* All Session Options are unchecked.
* Send PPP Echo Packets is unchecked. (I have it checked and have no problems, but others have reported success with this turned off.)
* Connect using a Terminal Window is unchecked.
* Prompt for password after dialing is unchecked.
* Use verbose logging is checked.

I haven't used a Pearl in a while, but when I did, I didn't have connection drops. Only thing different is I didn't have verbose logging checked.

Have you done this in more than one location on more than one day? Sometimes these problems are on the network and come and go.

The other thing that seems to vary wildly is T-Mobile's inactivity timeout length. In some locations, I can sit and read a web page for twenty minutes without being disconnected; others, five minutes of inactivity is enough to get me disconnected. I assume it has something to do with cell site load.

Do you get disconnected while actively using the connection? Try downloading a large-ish file (say, 15 mb or so) and see if you get disconnected in the middle.

I have the same problem, I connect to the internet and after a few minutes I can't access pages, but no disconnect occurs. At least as far as I can tell.

I changed my PPP settings according to the above and I can stay connect now for hours without logging out due to inactivity. I tested and let it stay connected for an hour without using the computer, when I clicked a link on the webpage it worked.

Thanks for the info about the System Preferences!
