Cool Newbie e-mail question

Please Login to Remove!

Hi

I am a newbie to phones that can read e-mail.

Don't have a Blackberry yet but want to buy one in next day or so.

If I have Wi-Fi in my home can I connect to my e-mails that way rather than having a Data Allowance from my Service Provider?

Thanks

Nope. You need a Blackberry data plan for any RIM related service such as email, BBM, Facebook, BB browser, BB Maps, etc.

Once you have that and the service books, you can use the WiFi connection for those services.

Default Thanks

A guy in an Orange store in the UK told me it would work like a laptop or PDA and get mails via. Wi-Fi.

Default Blackberry Sales Support

Is there (anywhere in the world) a phone number for Blackberry Pre-Sales support?

How does one 'speak' to Blackberry?

Thanks

I am not aware of a "pre" sales phone number. To be quite honest, RIM will charge for certain technical support. The best source of information should be your provider.

That being said, Dubdub's advice is correct. You cannot use the wi-fi service without a bonafide BB data plan. It just won't work. There are "work arounds" out there for certain functions but not for the e-mail service you speak of.

There is no number to call RIM that I am aware of. Sales are handled by the individual carriers. Some sales reps are more knowledgeable than others.

Some know their stuff, others do not.

So, what does it mean that the phone has Wi-Fi?
Is it that it will send and receive e-mails via. Wi-Fi if it can't get a provider signal?

It means that you can use WiFi hotspots or your home WiFi connection when it is available for data services. What data services that will be available is determined by whether or not you have the BB data plan.

Did you read the article with the link I provided?
