Default Office for Mac 2011 update SP1

Office for Mac 2011 SP1 Coming Next Week | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

"Microsoft will release Office for Mac 2011 service pack 1 (SP1) next week, the company announced Wednesday.

Microsoft promised "increased stability, security, and some new features to the suite—including improved Outlook syncing support—as well as some performance enhancements."

Specifically, SP1 will enable calendar synching between Outlook for Mac and Apple's Sync Services, which Microsoft said was much-requested.

"This will let you sync your Outlook calendar as well as contacts, notes and tasks with any service or device that supports Sync Services, including your iPhone and iPad," Microsoft said in a blog post.

Microsoft stressed, however, that Apple's new version of MobileMe will not sync with MacOS Sync Services starting May 5; it's live now for people who have already moved to the new version of MobileMe calendar. "As a result, Outlook 2011 SP1 calendars that sync with Sync Services on the Mac, will NOT be synced with MobileMe calendars," the company said.

So, if you sync your iPhone or iPad calendar with Sync Services via iTunes over a cable, you can sync with Outlook 2011 SP1. But if you sync via MobileMe, it won't sync with Outlook 2011 SP1."

Sorry to ask a stupid question, but where does this leave Blackberry?

BB Desktop uses Sync Services to sync a BB device.

So, this update means that a BB device will sync with Outlook 2011 Calendar & Contacts

Thanks mrandery, that's what I was hoping to hear! I'll report my experience next week.

But does it do it natively with the existing Mac Desktop app?

Or will the app need to be updated and is RIM planning to do that?

Well supposedly. This was intended for iOS devices, not specifically for anything using Sync Services. I do hope you're right but its odd RIM hasn't updated their documentation as of yet and the latest build for Desktop Manager for Mac STILL refers to Entourage not Outlook or both.

I worked with Outlook 2011 sp1 for a few days, was never able to sync with Blackberry, only succeeded in erasing what I had painstakingly tweaked in the Outlook Calendar.

I keep hearing suggestions that you're supposed to sync with Apple iCal and Address Book first, then sync with Outlook 2011. That seems doomed from the start because the format of Apple Address Book is not nearly as sophisticated as Blackberry's or Outlook.

Not sure what to do, other than sit tight, wait for sp2, and continue with Outlook 2003.

Oh, off topic, the Blackberry Desktop Manager's inability to perform a one-way sync (like DM for Windows) is a serious deficiency.

May not need to:

How to synchronize organizer data in Microsoft Office for Mac between the BlackBerry smartphone and a Mac computer using BlackBerry Desktop Software

There was something specific to Bidirectional sync or not.

Ok so after updating to SP1 I was able to Sync my Blackberry a few times but that is it. What I have noticed is that in Outlook both contacts and the Calendar copy themselves over to Ical and Apple Address Book. Anyone else notice this at all? Also since the first inital sync with the phone BBDM has stopped working all together even after several uninstalls and reinstalls. It gets to a certain point and stops.

The biggest drawback on Outlook 2011 is that is has to sync with iCal, Mac Address Book, and Notes before it syncs with anything else. The biggest offender, to my mind, is Address Book because the Apple version bears no resemblance to the Outlook version. As a result various categories get mishandled at best, deleted at worst.

Anyone who'd like to steer me in the right direction is welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

Jim
