Question WiFi vs Tethering - Auto Choice?

Please Login to Remove!

Dear all,

Just a quick one. If I have my Playbook tethered to my handheld but the Playbook is also linked to WiFi does the Playbook use the WiFi as a preference?

Hope it does, like a smartphone uses WiFi over 3G if it has a choice of both.

Thanks in advance. Sorry if it has been answered before.

I just joined today and i would like to expand upon the wifi/3g question....

My playbook is also connected by bluetooth to my smartphone but i don't have a tethering plan on my at&t plan.
Is the bluetooth connection between the phone and the playbook the same thing as "tethering?"

Bridging is not the same as tethering, though your experience with your carrier may varry. AT&T has been anti Bridge though I understand their stance has softened a bit of late.

When connected via the Bridge your data should come out of your BlackBerry phone data plan. When tethered it depends on the tethering agreement you have with your carrier. On my Rogers account in the end it doesn't matter because I get free tethering but it comes out of my BlackBerry phone data allotment.

My advice if your phone is a BlackBerry that can run Bridge, don't tether unless you need to because an application you use won't work over the Bridge.

Now, I have even used my 9810's Mobile Hotspot (with OS 7.1) in lieu of tethering. No cords required!

Yes, that is a nice feature, I've used it too. But unless I'm mistaken this looks like tethering to the carrier. Doesn't affect me (or other Rogers users with more than 500MB plans) but it is always good to check with your carrier lest they gleefully empty your bank account while quoting fine print.
