Well, your guess that I've damaged my hearing is wrong! I have my hearing tested every year as part of an OSHA health surveillance program. My hearing is rock-solid.
Yes, I understand that there is a very small margin of error for how you hold this device in order to hear it. I can hear it, but it's a pain to have to line it up exactly with your ear!!! A slight slip and you miss what the other person said. I find I hear it best when I hold the handset about 1/2" from my ear. That way you can shift it around a bit (or drive over a bump) and still hear.
Ultimately, I think the ear speaker could definitely benefit from a redesign.
