Okay I took the big step and loaded 4.1 to my active BlackBerry. Everything is working fine like in the test one. The EVDO is not affected at all, even in the instance of tethering unlike its the case with kurichan.

It is also connecting faster to the sites, overall a big improvement for me. Was not only able to load the Theme I created, but downloaded one from the mobile site called pixelate and that is working well also.

I have been able to assign individual ringtones to a few people like my wife and my son.

I have a strange Icon that says email settings that I have not figured out what it is for and will have to investigate further.

The only negative I have had so far is that I am not able to synchronize wirelessly with either BB. I attribute that to operator error more than anything and when I have more time I will continue to play with it but somehow I feel confident in that in due time I will get that working too. I believe that overall this is a good thing and I am extremely pleased.

Will continue to report as I see more progress.

I have installed the 4.1 software on my Alltel 7250. Works flawlessly.
KonTiki, the email settings icon was on my 4.0 Alltel software. What it did was set up my Blackberrry Internet Service account.

Thanks I finally had figured it out its just that prior to this the other two OS I had worked with did not have it so I just hid the Icon.

Now 24 hours since the upgrade everything seems to be working flawlessly still I am extremely happy with it. THe only two issues I have had are: no wireless synchronization yet but now I think it could be one of two reason, 1) i had a gneneric software installed and have not had luck removing all of it but I am sure I will eventually, the other 2) is that the bluetooth dongle I am using may not be one that is approved by MS. If that is the case it will have to wait because I am not about to go spend whatever a MS approved one will cost. Damned MS. The second issue I thought I had succeeded at first but now after more testing I see that it is not working, that is the tethering. It will connect and then disconnect because it is looking for some sort of password and I do not know yet how to clear that up. I had first reported that I had succeeded because since I did not want to get hit with any charges for tethering as soon as the connection was made I would disconnect so I thought it was good. Today i tried to use it to see the speed and all that and that is when it was disconnected for the password issue. I will persevere with that and I know eventually it will be accomplished. In the mean time I am extremely happy with the upgrade, no EVDO issues at all and everything is moving along at super speeds, will do benchmarking in a bit to compare. Will update a bit later.

Edit - Jbenchmarking results:

These results are after EVDO and OS 4.1 UPGRADE

This benchmark was run after I got EVDO and upgraded to OS 4.1:

JBenchmark1 : 849 Thats is a 4.5% increase over plain EVDO
Text 168
2D Shapes 213
3D Shapes 176
Fill Rate 64
Animation 228

JBenchmark2: 41 Thats a 28.5% increase
Image manipulation 49
Text 124
Sprites 16
3D transform 33
User Interface 34

I still do not know how to interpret any of this but I thought it be interesting to compare, and there is an improvement whatever those numbers mean. I had asked for an explanation the first time around but did not get it.

This only confirms what I had experienced, it is definitely getting better, and to quote Jackie Gleason:

"How Sweet It is".

Here are my serious frustrations/disappointments with OS v4.1 on the 7250.

(1) After hitting the phone button, you can no longer type in a person's name to dial. Instead, you have to hit the wheel, select "Dial from Address Book" and type the person's name. It's three extra steps. This is an utterly idiotic change.
(2) EVDO tethering has stopped working
(3) No more "C" from the home screen to compose an e-mail.
(4) Menu items are bolded when selected. It's ugly and distracting.

RIM must be distracted by this lawsuit to the point of stupidity. Sure, 4.1 is a bit snappier and we can finally snooze appointments, but to remove often used shortcuts it blatant stupidity.

I think I'm going to downgrade...

Agreed. I cannot wrap my head around the logic of this change. My assumption is that it is a side effect of using an operating system that was designed with the 8700/7130 in mind and then tweaked to run on older models. Placing a call used to take less than a second and now takes 1.5 to 2 seconds ... very frustrating.

This one I can live with ... although I can appreciate it's importance to some users. The interesting thing is that the replacement "C"-Compose function that was written for the 8700 actually starts composing an SMS message rather than an email on the 7250 ...

I noticed this as well. Menu items were not only bold but in a font one size larger than my default. After resetting my font selections the size difference went away and the bold looked much less out of place.

I don't know ... there is a lot of good with the bad. I'm hoping that RIM will put a little more time into redeveloping OS 4.1 to work better with the 7250.

You could start with some more details.

You're absolutely right. It's much more tolerable with Millbank 8 than Millbank 7. Trouble is, I like the screen real estate...

I still wish we could just turn the darn bolding off! Is this part of the theme? Maybe I could quash it with a theme editor?

I suspect I could create an applet that jumps straight to dial by name as well... To reinstall the JDK or not...?

OK - application idea: an app that launces straight to the dial by name interface of the phone app with a single keypress from the home screen...

But come to think of it, OS v4.1 is already set to trap an extended keypress on the Send button on the 8700 to go to dial by name. How could we accomplish this on the 72XX Series?

Anyone have any ideas?

Anybody that had 4.0.2.41 for Verizon that upgraded: How is the battery charge time with 4.1? I recently upgraded my BB from 4.0.0.204 to 4.0.2.41 (EVDO) and the charge time is atrocious. Any improvement with 4.1? My guess is that it has, since this upgrade hasn't been officially released by VZW

Seems to be just as bad. Sometimes I wonder if it's actually charging. In fact, sometimes I wonder if it's DRAINING when plugged in!

As a matter of fact I think it is charging a lot faster for me. I went from 57% to 100% last night plugged to the wall with the Phone shut down in about 20 minutes, that to me is great.

Kurichan I have seen a lot of your posts and see that you seem to be having a lot of issues that I am not, I wonder and this is just a question, not asking you to, if you would benefit from wiping it and reloading the software in the event that something went wrong during installation. PLease understand that I am just wondering since I have none of the issues you are having.

KonTiki,

That might be a good idea when I get the time, but I'm just curious what problems you think I am having that you aren't except for the EVDO tethering breaking? (I was exaggerating about the charge - this is an issue that everyone has - if you don't have it you're the exception)

My problems are:
  1. RIM "C"ompose is gone from the home screen and the workaround creates an SMS message
  2. No way to dial by name without three extra steps
  3. Tethering broke
  4. I don't like the new menu display
#2 is the deal killer for me. I am a heavy telephone user and this change really slows me down to the point of wanting to downgrade just to get it working again.

You have a 7250 w/OS v4.1 installed and can type "C" from the home screen to start a new e-mail?

I just upgraded my Verizon 7250. It took around 30 Minutes until the upgrade was completed. So far I'm not running into any issues.

Thank you Mark!!

Look to see if dial from home screen was turned on when you upgraded. Just a thought.

You might be the only person on the planet. What carrier and what theme? You sure you don't mean that you have desktop v4.1 installed? You're not confusing desktop with the BB OS, right?
