AIM software --- Confused!!
Please Login to Remove!
Hey guys.
I just got my blackberry and I am overall quite confused. What I would like is the software that comes installed on many phones, that uses SMS (text messages) to sign into AIM instead of the ones that use the mobile internet. I only have about 256kB data on my current data plan, so dad is not a good thing, however I do have unlimited text messages.
Could someone please point me in the direction of the AIM software, or any aim software, possibly free, that uses the SMS network instead of mobile internet?
Id really appreciate it!
Mike

I think your stuck w/just unlimited SMS if thats what you have and limited data. The Free ones like Ramble (that works with AIM) uses data.

No. No AIM application comes with the phone there are several out there you can use, Ramble is free, then there is Verichat. However if you do not have an unlimited dataplan it will cost you a bundle even if you are a moderate user. And anyone that uses AIM or any of the IM software from my experience is more than just an occasional user.

Of course this phone comes with AIM software!! When it was first bought it had it, and it does use the SMS system. I am an average user, and there is no such thing as an unlimited data plan in canada, I wish there was. There has to be something out there that uses SMS instead of the damn mobile internet. It's way to expensive up there... I don't even see a browser icon on my bb.

If your phone had AIM when you got it it either did not come directly from your provider, and/or you bought used.

T-Mobile. http://www.t-mobile.com/bbupgrade/ has the SMS IM client. However, you need to be a t-mobile subscriber to get access.

It doesn't matter if it will work on a non-TMO phone. This guy doesn't have a data plan, so he doesn't get to use AIM. Plain and simple.
Even if the AIM application uses SMS for messaging... it still needs a data plan of some sorts to authenticate and log into AIM. You can't log into an IM service of any kind over SMS. Think about it.
Without a blackberry data plan, all you get is voice and sms... period.

penguin you are ver naive. on my cell phone which I had prior to the blackberry, it CAME with AIM installed onto it. Logging in, getting the buddy list, EVERYTHING used SMS. Believe it or not, you don't know how it all works.
If a program solely relies on SMS, that's what it uses. I didn't receive a data usage charge all month when I used AIM.

Penguin, i vaguely remember that you did log in VIA SMS and that if you had a large buddy list it could use up 5 or 6 messages just to log in.
mikelc2: perhaps you can explain the problem you're having. Is it when you try to load the app or can you load it and it doesn't work?

Ok, Soapm, thank you very much for the app. I upgraded my Bb to 4.0 and now the application is installed and working fine! The only trouble ATM that I am having is when I try to login, I get a communication error, when I first start I see it sending and receiving, but then it just stops.

Be careful of BlackBerryOS 4.0 -- its idle background data communications easily exceeds 256 kilobytes per month. (i.e. communications/synchronization between BWC/BIS and your BlackBerry). If your carrier has a data meter or you can call them to find out, monitor your data usage religiously!
