Default Im back with a new blackberry, a few questions :)

Please Login to Remove!

Hey, I'm so happy to have a blackberry again. and happy to be back on the blackberry forums.. I have a Unlocked Blackberry Bold 9650 now, it shows it supports Verizon and AT&T 3G, but I had it unlocked, put it in GSM mode but it won't pick up the AT&T 3G where I live (only edge) does anyone know why this is?

Also, no matter what profile I select, when I take a picture the shutter sound is always on, is there a way to silence it? Does anyone know if there is a video recording app that I can use that will only use the cameras flash when needed instead of having to set it to on or off first before starting to record video? My old blackberry curve would sense light and turn the flash off when recording video but my Bold doesn't..Does anyone else here have my same blackberry and tried Opera Mini only to find its a very slow running app? I have it and don't use it due to it being so jumpy/choppy like as I move the on screen cursor around.. One more thing I was wondering if there's a way to change what I believe is called the alpha tag, the carrier name that diplays on my screen when I enter a service area (AT&T Verizon Wireless etc). If anyone knows any of the answers to these kindly let me know

Does anyone have Verizon Wireless Push to Talk (PTT) and would like to talk with me? if you do please private message me! I have never used it yet and would like to see how well it works compared to my old Nextel.

Sorry for any typos in my thread as I am trying to get used to the keyboard on my new blackberry bold

Are you using in on AT&T or Verizon?

You won't be able to use PTT on AT&T.

Right now I'm using Verizon Wireless but I think I'm gonna be going back to AT&T just not totally sure yet..I see options for 2G 3G or 2G and 3G when I go in GSM mode but it won't pick up the AT&T 3G..

Do you have an active AT&T SIM card in the device?
Are you in an area where AT&T has 3G frequencies active?

For PTT, you should be able to get those by loading a Verizon release of the device OS.

You won't get 3G on At&t. The 9650 has 2100 3G band, AT&T uses 850 & 1900 band.

I have a active AT&T sim card in it. Also yes there is AT&T 3G in my area. And Verizon Wireless 3G but only edge over T-Mobile.
Which carrier uses 2100 3G band? It let's me select between 3G & 2G or only 3G or only 2G..When I pick 3G it keeps saying searching for UMTS. So if it does support GSM 3G like it seems to from the menu, which carrier uses the 2100 band 3G ?

EDIT:

I googled and found this, but there seems to be mixed facts about what networks use what frequencies all over the web:
AT&T uses 850/1900/2100 MHz band while T-Mobile uses 1700/2100 MHz band.

The 9650 is not supposed to really be used within the US. Its so you can get international service. Which is why it has the more "universal" band of 2100 used predominently in the rest of the world, but not by At&t.

This is where I got the information:
UMTS frequency bands - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It will let you select those options because they are Standard Options. They are there on the AT&T 9700 but it doesn't mean you'll get T-mobile US 3G on it for example.

Can someone please tell me what the APN should be (User Name and password etc) for me using a Unlocked BlackBerry Bold 9650 on the AT&T ?

Also I seen people who request setup unlocked blackberry's and use them on other networks and they say you must request service books, where in my phone do I go and how do I request those Service Books?
Thank you

Do you have a BLACKBERRY Data Plan on AT&T?

I didn't think that AT&T had BlackBerry Data on GoPhone.

Without the proper data plan, you will not get the Service Books and thus will not get the data features.

ok...I just asked how to do it, whether what carrier I am using (prepaid or not) doesn't seem to be relevant...I know att doesn't offer Blackberry data on prepaid though they should, I am simply asking how to do it...Not to be told something I already know..

I am simply tired of people trying to act smart when I was asking for answers not for you to tell me I cannot get service books because I am a prepaid customer at the moment..

I am in the process of switching to a locally run gsm network that supports blackberry data.

That's the point. You cannot request the service books without a blackberry data plan.
The request doesn't go anywhere.

WOW!

The point that you missed was ......

Without the proper data plan, you will not get the Service Books and thus will not get the data features.

It CANNOT be done. It's not a matter of someone "trying to act smart when giving answers". It's THE answer. It's a FACT.

Whether the carrier offers it is COMPLETELY relevant.

the service books is in options, advanced option, I am not sure but I think it might be downloaded automatically when you sign up and get the carrier service. I never had to request them with my tour,
