Default Problems with 8800 modem and pool.bin

Please Login to Remove!

Until recently I had an 8700, it's on 02 in the UK and I have used it many times as a tethered modem.

My employer replaced it with an 8800 and I uninstalled the old device manager and desktop programs and installed the latest versions. Everything is OK except two things, which may or may not be connected:

1. When I run device manager a file called pool.bin appears on my desktop, 256 bytes long. It does not contain anything I recognize, in text form.

2. The first time after booting my XP Pro PC that I try and connect to the internet using the 8800 as a modem I get a successful connection, but it only lasts for a few seconds before it is dropped. Thereafter connection never proceeds beyond the "Verifying user name and password" stage.

A typical modem log (below) for a connection attempt appears to show it stuck in a loop with the message below repeating indefinitely (I've stopped the log after three repetitions).

After waiting 20ms CD is still low.

Colleagues with their 8700s have no problems connecting.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Sean.

No ideas, anybody?

Since my last email I have got a new XP Pro laptop, I've installed the latest desktop and as my new laptop does Bluetooth I've tried that - the results are the same.

Tethered modem. Running device manager deposits a file called pool.bin on the desktop. Very first connection to internet succeeds, lasts a few seconds then dies. Reconnects never succeed, modem log always says "After waiting 20ms CD is still low. whilst I see the message "Verifying user name and password."

Bluetooth modem - no pool.bin, because it doesn't need device manager, otherwise results are the same.

The modem init string is the usual AT+CGD etc. and the username/password have no effect.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated, I've run out of ideas.
