In those cases, its a shortcut key, not something that needs to be "typed". You're not entering it anywhere, just pressing it will give the corresponding shortcut and it will work.

I think you misread the OP's question. He/she asked if there are shortcuts while
editing or
composing a message...not while reading a message.
I'm not aware of any shortcuts or other method of navigating around a message during composition...other than the pad/track ball/jog wheel.
