The weird thing is I have over 40 9650s at work and they experience the same signal.

So either RIM really fubared in this model (like the iphone 4) or its a software issues.

Either, I am hoping it gets resolved soon.

With the identical problem in the 9630 (we had two) and 9650 (we have two now), I think it's time to start considering this may be an issue with the radio module hardware/firmware rather than it being a software issue. Maybe the radio module firmware throttles down the power to conserve battery or idles when it's in a decent signal area. Or maybe it's just a lousy design! After nearly a year of complaints, I'm no longer assuming there will be a fix for this. Actually, I must have reached that conclusion last December when I twisted the arm of our local store manager and bought a network extender at a hefty discount.
So all I can say is...don't hold your breath waiting for a fix!

PS: we had nothing but great signal on the two 8330s we previously used.

Try rebooting your PC. Another Installer must be running in the back ground.

I am reading that this build seems to be the fastest buy the signal oscillates. .699 was the most stable and .732 was sort of a mixture

A lot of people are reporting that the signal bounces aren't affecting their ability to place calls. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing that. I'm still dropping calls and I notice that if I try to place a call when the signal has bounced down to 0, the call actually doesn't go thru until signal returns. It will display "Calling XXXXX.....' until signal returns, then it will display 'Connected' and the phone will start ringing. It'd be one thing if this were happening somewhere in a fringe service area, but this is happening constantly in midtown Manhattan and outlying suburban areas where signal strength should be excellent.

I've started wondering if this may be a network issue related to the ongoing LTE upgrades and may be affecting th EVDO Rev A radio but not the standard EVDO radio and thats why only 9650 users are seeing the problems??

But it's not just 9650 users. Many 9630 users had the identical complaints when it was released last year. As with all issues, users tend to stop complaining after a period of time. Anecdotal evidence: My wife and I were in Boone, NC for a week last fall. There was a VZW tower no more than 100 yards from our hotel window. Both of us watched the signal fluctuate between 80 and 110 db while the 9630 was idle. Plus, we dropped calls while using the phone in the hotel room. Maybe it is a network issue...possibly a sloppy handoff from the primary site to a secondary site when the phone idles. I assume that could happen if the primary site temporarily reaches capacity.

Both the wife and I believe the 9650 radio performs better than the 9630 ever did, but not great...by a long shot!

Interesting. For whatever reason, I haven't experienced the same issues with the 9630. I picked mine up on launch day last summer, and had to swap out a couple of times before I got a good trackball, but the signal was always solid. Once I started seeing the issues with my 9650, I placed my 9650 & my wife's 9630 side by side. I would watch the 9560 radio fluctuate wildly, while her 9630 was solid. At that point I just decided to ditch the 9650 and revert to my 9630. I updated & activated the 9630 and I had solid radio for two days. After spending a few weeks with the trackpad, I just couldn't deal with the tracball & swapped back to my 9650. I was hopeful that .810 would address the issue, but it has not. And I'm stuck without PTT.

Feature wise, the 9650 is everything I want - it just needs a stable radio! Not sure who is to blame - RIM or VW - but the past three RIM releases on VZW have been complete disasters (9530, 9630, 9650).

My 8330/9550 had no problems at all.
Did not own a 9630 or 9530 So I can't speak for those models.

The problem might not be a RIM or VZW issue. Qualcomm supplies the radio hardware! It would be nice if at least one of the three would acknowledge the issue and find a solution.

Ok guys! I'm in the middle of a huge pissing contest on another board. A few weeks ago I took my Sprint BB 9650 to a Sprint repair facility as I was having track pad issues. It’s under warranty. I had downloaded the OS 5.0.0.810 a few weeks prior from the OS 5.0.0.699. I don’t think the OS had any issues to do with the track pad not work right. I’ve noticed a few issues, but nothing I would lose any sleep over. Like everyone else I had to have the latest and greatest and had to have it now OS on my device! So I take the BB in and the tech jumps my case for having an unsupported OS on the devise. Sprint is still on the previous version OS of 5.0.0.699. So in a nut shell the tech told me I could either downgrade the OS to the Sprint supported version or he would charge me accordingly for non-warranty work. So I heeded the warning and I let them downgrade the OS. I get the BB back and everything is working normally, so I think as it has not incurred any issues since then that I can find and they replaced the track pad.

So here’s the million dollar question, why does Sprint not support the OS 5.0.0.810? I’m told on the other board it’s not carrier specific. OK then why does it not find the upgrade when I plug it into my desktop software and I have to force it down another way? Sprint still says the current OS is 5.0.0.699. I’ve tried to upgrade back to the 5.0.0.810 via both Sprint and Blackberry web sites and both say I have the current OS on the phone. Not carrier specific? What gives?

Obviously it must be somewhat carrier specific otherwise when I hit the upgrade device tab I should be getting it, correct? There must be some kind of code that says for Alltel only devices. Is there code in the .810 OS that’s specifically for Alltel and for the other carriers it just sits idle and unused within the device? Since I’m not a program genius I can’t say.

To compound the issue a leaked version of OS 6 is floating around and of course the OS 5 is no longer a wanted item as something bigger and better is now available. Is Sprint pouring it’s eggs into another basket vs. messing around with another version and fixing issues? So with a leak you get just that a leak and whole batch of issues that go with that. My take on a leak is just that a leak that's gotten out somehow whether via a reputable source or someone with a great deal of time on their hands to re-write the code and shove it down the BB and hope it works and blog about its issues. So why buy a new device when you can have your old device with a copy of unsupported OS 6 on it?

So I’ve been called everything from A-Z on this. Some insist that the leak is a Beta OS and BB is monitoring the results via boards? In my mind it would better if BB Program Mangers and Engineers monitor the OS in a controlled environment vs. letting a bunch of geeks apply patches upon patches hoping to get this off the ground and call it an OS 6 want a be? My rebuttal on this was like trying to install a Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit disk onto a an old 286 PC and hoping and praying it will work. I’m sure there are some idiots out there that would think this was doable. But I think I’m smart enough to figure that it won’t work regardless of how much time and energy one spends it’s not going to work.

So call me stupid, uniformed, ect!!! Whatever!! For now I have to be content with the OS that’s supported by the carrier and leave it at that until they officially release something if I want warranty work done on my BB.

Anyone care to commit?

I think in many places were you can DL the OS's it has a disclaimer stating your carrier will not support you.

If the carrier has a way out they will take. Why doesn't the carrier want to support who knows, supposedly they test the OS's and decide what is good enough to be official, but it is nothing but the carrier word.

All the BlackBerry OS's come from RIM, these OS can be written by people outside RIM. Hybrids simply mix/match CODs.

Each OS is written for a specific model in mind, so you can not install an 8530 OS on the 8330.

As far as where these leaks come from, who really know. I do believe they are leaked by someone.

But in all seriousness, installing OS's not released by carrier is not supported, it's been a long standing rule so I wouldn't bother getting upset by that. Just downgrade and bring it back.

I've had to bring a BlackBerry back to VZW once, I downgraded it prior to avoid any issues.

Follow-up to my original post. I shot an email off to my sister who works at Sprint's corporate campus in Reston. She in turn shot the email/question over to Sprint's tech support team. The latest OS for the Sprint branded BB 9650 is 5.0.0.699. Sprint will only support up to this version. Any other OS installed and not supported by Sprint would be considered a breach of warranty and Sprint may refuse to warranty the phone. They did not go into the nitty gritty about why or why not and I was not pressing the issue.

They did make mention that other carriers OS for the 9650 were not 100%compatible with some of Sprints applications for the Sprint BB 9650. Therefore some applications may work and other may not depending on what application you’re trying to use. Which I did have problems with a few, but it was not a bridge burning event where I had to use it do or die.

I think you’re 100% correct with your statements. Some of the code is not carrier supported and re-written by people other than RIM. Many folks were complaining about apps not working correctly, hardware not working correctly, ect. Why would you want to put yourself through all the agony of this knowing it’s not 100% or even close to working?

So I’ve learned a lesson here. Having the latest and greatest is not what’s it’s all cracked up to be. I’ll stick with the current OS until Sprint decides something else is better and works.

VZW has provided 5.0.0.975 (rel 1600), Platform 4.2.0.424 both on their website (BlackBerry® Software Updates) and OTA -- it has been posted for the 9630 as well.
