Default GPS on Google Maps

Please Login to Remove!

I can't seem to figure out how to connect (or turn on) the GPS to google maps. I'm running 3.2.1. Anyone have any success?

Options program, advanced options> GPS. Make sure Location is on then Google Maps will eventually lock on.

Plus you need to have a BB data plan for the maps.

And for the GPS lock on, you should be outside with a clear view of the sky. It can take 20 minutes or more to lock on, especially for the first time.

I had no trouble using 3.2.1 today. If fact it was the first time using it on the AT&T 9700 (got it less then 24hrs. ago) and the first ever lock took about 8 seconds. I was in my truck.

When I ordered the phone, the CC rep stated that I must have a data plan or get one in order to buy any BlackBerry. I already have one, so no problem there.

I locked on faster than the satellite image could load. I switched to map view and it had me driving down the road.

It worked great for me yesterday when I fired it up. Works faster than it did on my 9000 as well!

Worked! Thanks for the tip. Works alright, but worried if I'm driving in a congested area, like D.C., if it would be able to keep up. I'm in L.A. and it won't be a problem as most of our streets are spaced apart pretty well. Guess I'll test it out.

Now, should I turn the GPS off if I'm not using it? Will it save battery life? How do I turn it off??

Yes, it will draw juice. Turn it off the same way you turned it on.

I don't remember how I turned it on.

Settings>Options>Advanced Options>GPS>

Do I turn off GPS Services or Location Aiding?

At least this is how I "think" I would turn it off.

Default Gps

My new 9700's GPS will not lock. Tried twice with a great view of the sky (especially the southern sky). It was through a large window, but I assume that shouldn't prevent the lock---otherwise you'd never be able to use this in a car.

Could this be a defective unit? Does the first successful GPS lock so drastically affect subsequent locks that I should stand outdoors repeatedly trying to get an initial lock? Any other ideas?

It's not defective... just go to advanced options, refresh gps. The first time it locks on, on any phone (I find), it takes forever. You ahve to really leave it and let it it connect (although I did it inside my house and it was fine). It took a couple tries though.

Then you can use it and it will be quick from what I find..

Thank you. I already had used the Advanced Options > GPS > Refresh GPS method -- three times -- before I posted. It took a long time, but each time resulted in a GPS Location of "N 0 0.00, W 0 0.00, Fix Time: None, Number of Satellites: 0, Accuracy: 0.0 m."

I'll give it another try, though.

Ok, I got the GPS to lock by doing it outdoors. (Thanks.)

The next challenge, it seems, is getting Google Maps 3.2.1 to get the "My Location." It is misbehaving in that it refuses to use cell-tower data when GPS is unavailable, thus rendering it useful in any outdoors location where fresh GPS data is available, but useless in any other location (including a few outdoors locations, any indoors location and any location at all in the first minute or so before the GPS data is refreshed). This used to work fine on an 8900 on OS 5.0.0.3XX, but on the 9700 with OS 5.0.0.3XX, no dice thus far.

I know you already solved your problem but I wanted to mention that some office/house windows block the ability of GPS units from locking onto the satellites... car windows are different.

Where I work, I can go to the window and it takes forever (if it actually does) connect/lock onto the GPS satellites. I go outside in front of the same window and it has no problems locking onto the GPS satellites in under 1 minute. The same thing (1 minute) when it is in my car.
