Default 8830 as a modem

Please Login to Remove!

I just picked up a Blackberry 8830, and my provider is Sprint. We are setup to be able to use these as a modem in conjunction with the Sprint Mobile Broadband software. I am running Win Vista Business x86 client, but the BB does not show up in the software as a modem. I have tried on a laptop running Windows XP Sp2 and my phone on that system works fine as a modem. Any thoughts as to what I can tweak to get this working?

Have you tried to connect using Sprint's Connection Manager? Also, there have been reports that you may need to install the modem drivers/connection manager software before you install Desktop Manager.

You need to install the Desktop Manager software to install the USB drivers so that the Windows software recongizes the device.

I have done both as mentioned above and it still will not work for me for some reason. I guess I will put in a support request with Sprint to see if they have any thoughts on why this is not working.

Good luck with this. This is an issue that is ripe for having Sprint pawn off responsibility to MS and Vista, and vice versa.

If you have another pc available, I would try installing on that to rule out your particular pc as the problem.

I haven't had any problems using Sprint's connection software to use the 8830 as a modem. Including machines that have never had BB Desktop Manager installed on them. Never tried it on Vista though.

Unfortunately it works on otjher systems w/o a problem. I have not tried on another Vista machine as this is only 1 of 3 that we have within the company. Thanks for the replies.

I am having the same problem with my husband's BB. If you get a solution, please post it here.

Thanks,

Wanda

My Vista machine gets a BSOD if I try to use the BB as a modem. This is with the 4.3 version of Desktop Manager. My XP laptop works like a champ.

I haven't yet tried the Sprint connection manager on the Vista box.... no real need, since I only use the tethering on the laptop.

i would like to use this but i was wondering i had an "unlimited data plan" from Telus mobility in canada on an 8830 i have full unlimited access... web, pin, email all data including my bbmaps, jive talk etc i dont pay a dime over $15 for my data.... but i heard a nasty rumor that i will be charged extra if i try to use the device as a modem? is this true? is there some kind of work around?

why not ask telus? for fear of not getting the truth because this "rumor" came from a telus dealer
