We are a small business with a simple network. We run Exchange on MS Small Business server 2003, there are five client PCs on the network and OWA is used to remote email. One of our members has just bought a Blackberry Bold, and I am wondering if it is OK to install BES (with the one complimentary license) on the SBS server. The blackberry website says this OK, but I have read other resources (including material on these forums) suggesting that installing BES on the same server as exchange and the domain controller is a bad idea.

Unfortunately, I do not have much leeway to change our existing setup and I can’t buy a new server. Should I go for the BES install, or should I set up Exchange for POP access and use BIS, or should I attempt something with virtualization with either the server or one of the workstations on the network?

I am not an IT pro, I’m just the guy who knows a bit about computers. Thanks in advance for any advice.

For a single user, in your environment, I'd load up MS Virtual Server and create a VM on SBS to handle BES. You would not need a VM larger than 20GB and allocate 512-1024MB RAM.

A number of my clients have single user BPSes running on 2003SBS boxes absolutely fine. As long as you don't have more than a handful of users on it you shouldn't have any problems at all if it's installed properly.

I've installed BES Express on multiple SBS2003 machines myself, all without issue. I followed the standard BES installation doc and everything worked just fine. I've even done this remotely via RDP, but I doubt that makes much of a difference. If you need any pointers during your install, please don't hesitate to PM me for my email address.

I also have a full BES installed on SBS 2003 R2
I have 15 BB users and have experienced zero troubles
15 regular work stations attached to the SBS side as well
Average cpu usage is below 5% on each core
Memory Usage is in the 2 - 3 Gig range also
There are guides that give you step by step and when followed result in a nice stable system
