I am in the process of planning our upgrade from BES v4 to BES v5.

The BES will be installed on a new server.

I remember awhile back when upgrading from v3 to v4, we installed BES v4 and when trying to transfer our exisitng users, it would not work. We had to install BES v3 and then upgrade to BES v4. Will I run into the same issues when installing BES v5 on a new server?

Also, I can download the trial version to new server and once I transfer it should unlock, correct?

Depends on what support you have......we have RIM T-Support and ordered the migration kit. Basically you get a new SRP ID to use on the new server and have 90 days before your old SRP is disabled. We're using the Enterprise Transporter to move users from the old environment over to the new one. Both servers can run in parrallel during the migration.

you can search on this forum how to upgrade BES version.
and the license is still valid when you have upgrade version 4 to 5.

You can swap out a Temp SRP to a Production SRP after you have migrated the users over.
