Default Mobile Network or Wi-fi or both

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

I just received my Curve 8900 yesterday...and am very thankful for this forum!

What is the recommended options for "Managing Connections"? For example, at home (I work at home) should I toggle both Moble Network (ATT) and my Wi-Fi options on? Or just have one of them on? Does it matter? (not asking about connection speeds, asking about configuration)

Why am I able to toggle both of them on? Does the BB regularly switch between connections if they are on.......what are the advantages and disadvantages of having them both on? Doesn't having Wi-Fi simply toggled on affect the battery performance?

Thanks for your help!

Just leave them both on. You can turn of mobile network for like when you are in an airplane or if you are roaming and don't want any calls. And then wifi is just like a wifi swutch on anything else. But if you connect to wifi then leave them both on, if you don't use wifi then turn it off

Have them both activated. Your BB will switch between the two depending where you are. When you're at home it will use the WiFi network as the signal is more likely stronger than the mobile one. When you leave the WiFi area it will automatically switch back to the mobile network. It's how i have it set up as for some reason the 8900 can't pick up a great signal from the mobile network in my house (never had the problem with standard mobiles).

Both on is the way to go. Some claim that WiFi reduces battery life but that's not true at all, and it's way way faster of course.

Another advantage is if you're connected to both Wi-Fi and EDGE, you can talk and use data at the same time. If you're only connected to EDGE, you can talk or data, but not both.

I'm pretty sure you can't do that with an 8900, only a Bold on 3G. Voice and txt yes, voice and data no.

The advice to leave WiFi turned on all the time - or most of the time - is good as long as you have a WiFi connection at home to use - like a wireless access point connecting to your main internet connection. If you don't have one at home then there may be little harm leaving it turned on, but it will do you little good if it can't connect to anything.

If you don't know whether or not you have a WiFi connection at home, the chances are that you don't.

I can certainly use both voice and data when connected to WiFi.

Yes - so can I on AT&T. As long as you have a WiFi connection that connects in your location the data uses the WiFi and the voice uses the EDGE connection allowing you to do both at the same time.
