My blackberry acts possessed. After my 6 hour flight from vegas to ny, I cannot make any phone calls anymore. As soon as I dial someone the call indicator keeps switching between headset and handset (the headphone picture and arrow pictures). When I plug my headphones, it doesn't switch back and forth anymore.
I did reboot via keyboard, and once again via battery pull, it doesn't seem to help, in fact I see that it also messed up some of my programs. After the 2nd battery pull I got 14 of my applications show up on Home menu as Application Name (Archived) like Wunder Radio (Archived), Slacker Radio (Archived), yet I still have copies of them in my Applications folder.
I went back to default theme, thinking it could be the theme, but it doesn't help either. What happened? Could it be hardware failure, where phone keeps thinking there is a headset plugged in?

Sounds like the headset hole is dusty. The contacts are forced together when the dust is pushed farther in when you plug in the headphones. Try to blow out the hole with canned air. DO NOT TURN THE CAN FROM IT"S UPRIGHT STATE WHILE SPRAYING IN YOUR BB. The propellant will condense and shoot moisture in your BB if you tip the can too far.

Same prob for me...blew it out w/ the air can but problem persists...

Try it at an angle, when I first did it to mine it worked for like 10-15 minutes and later came back. I guess when I blew the first time it went further in or just moved a little. I wonder if this is going to be a regular thing with 9700, just like lint/dust under screen with 8300.

i had a similar issue and i believe it happened after upgrading my OS.

what i found to work is:
- plugging headphones into the blackberry headphone jack
- play a song to make sure it plays through the headphones
- *press stop on the playing song*
- unplug the headphones
- press and hold '1' to dial to your voicemail and verify that
voice is coming through the handset and not repeatedly switching back and forth between the headset and headphones.

i still dont think it is a software problem. i have experienced this on multiple OS's and tried many different ways to fix it. the only way i could fix it, was a physical solution which i explained in my other post. check the link in post #6 of this thread

I have the same problem, but lucky that i were still under warranty so AT&T send me diff 9700.

We didn't see the other topic before, can someone merge these two so we can have everyone with same problem under same topic?

trax, you may be surprised but not many people carry their headsets/headphones with them around. Plus I still think that when you plugged in/out it just reseated something inside and it just worked. Same as when you blow into it. I don't think it is dust issue, it is some crappy connectors inside that get stuck or get shorted until they are moved around with a strong blow of air or something else. I wonder if someone can dissect one..

i totally agree with you. i moved something inside that returned it to how it was supposed to be. that,s why iv,e been saying i think its a physical issue not software. i don,t carry my headset around with me either. i was stuck with a broken phone for half a day until i got a chance to mess with it and fix it

Or until you get dizzy trying to blow air into the little headphone jack.. So far it did not come back, and I have been carrying my phone in my pocket. Last time it happened was after my 6 hr flight, 4 hrs of which passed listening to music on my blackberry.. Which could be the issue.

Had this problem with my 9700. Tried a variety of OS setting tweaks and then installed two different OSs but nothing helped. A friend asked whether I was using aftermarket earphones for music...and I was (pretty decent ones in fact). Couldn't believe that could be the problem. Inspected jack with flashlight and it was clear of visible debris. Having tried all other potential fixes, inserted original BB wired earbuds into device a few times. Problem solved. Haven't used non-BB earphones since. Problem has not returned. Cause of problem unknown. Results of this fix may vary. But it was the only thing that worked for me.

am so bored cos i have the bold and iot worked for two days and it started jumpin . switching between handset and headset. someoneplease help me . ihave updated the os dna still am tryin to loose ma patience.its quiet expensive too . please help

i think that reading this thread is about as much help as you can get. try the things mentioned here. if they dont work, then you probably need a replacement

I had the same intermittent headset/handset problem (a few days after upgrading firmware to tmo .714). Plugging in a cheap pair of headphones during a few calls seems to have fixed the problem for me.

Details--
Before the problem, I was using my BB headset a lot. I tried (very carefully) cleaning out the jack. Cleaning worked for a couple minutes, then the problem came back. I haven't tried plugging in the BB headset again, though I suspect it may not be any better than a normal pair of headphones (?).

I have been following (and enduring) this issue for months. There is much to say about it, but let me just leave it at this: The problem is sufficient grounds to have the device replaced. I did, as have several others. Good luck.

I wouldn't get my device replaced because of this issue. I am going to say that it has something to do with the RIM headphones that come with the phone, they must be causing a short or something in the device. I have been using my cheap $10 headphones ever since, I have no problem at all, because the cheap buds do not have microphone on them, therefore they never trigger the mic/headset switch when I plug them in, which won't get stuck after pulling them out.

it worked for me.. just took an ear bud n cleaned the headphone jack slot.. n its back to normal headset mode now.. thanks buddy
