Default Is customer-defined APN (TCP options) actually used if device is actually registered?

If the device and SIM are correctly registered and active in RIM;
Is the APN defined in TCP options actually used?

Some apps require the APN, even with the device on a blackberry data plan. Opera mini comes to mind, but that was a while ago and I don't know about now. There may be other examples.
