Default wifi with data services off w/9000

I live in the US and am currently travelling abroad in Europe and Africa. There is plenty of wifi internet access so I don't feel the need to pay ATT ripoff data charges. I am looking for my phone to use the cell phone network for calls and dedicate data/internet to wifi connections.

Under my "Manage Connection" there are three options. Mobile Network Options, WIFI options, and Bluetooth options. RIM puts the data services on/off switch unter mobile network options. I figured that if I turned that off the phone would still look for data/internet through the wifi connection. I have come to find that it turns data/internet off throughout the phone.

How can one rig the phone to not use the phone network for data and dedicate data transfer to wifi connections? I'm sure there's other international travellers looking to save a buck that have run into this issue. If no one has something, then I will start complaining to ATT and RIM when I get home.

Thanks!!!

Basically, you have to have data services: ON, but UNCHECK the mobile network box.
Then you can use wi-fi, but you obv. wouldn't get calls and texts.
This is the only way, and it is a trade off.

Manage Connections > Mobile Network Options > Data Services > off or off when roaming.

It is MY experience turning that off leaves enabled the WiFi connection for mail, Hotspot browser, etc.

I'm in Hong Kong with my AT&T BlackBerry. I can get on Wifi with grey logo, so I can access thru browser, Viigo, Beejive. But push e-mail, BBM and none of the other things are working. It looks like that WIFI would only be available when you have a active BIS plan on your designated carrier...
