Default Urgent: Contact list searching problem

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all, I am using BB 9000 and BES with exchange server. And my contact includes english and chinese entries.
There is a problem in searching the contact list.

When I type letter "a" in the contact screen, it only shows some of the contact which are begining with letter "a" but it cannot shows all the contact which begining with letter "a".

Type other letters also have the similar problem. Is it a bugs of the searching function? Any solution?

Thanks

Johnson, open your address book application and press the Menu key > and then Filters.

UNcheck any filters that checked.

Now return to searching the address book, do you find all of your contacts?

Maybe I don't understand what you are looking for, then.

Just to eliminate the silly questions, you have tried scrolling down to reveal more contacts, right?

yes, of course.

Also, when i type "a", and continuously scroll down, it will show others entries which are not starting with letter "a'. Does anyone know the search function
algorithm?

That is odd. If I type A I get all contacts containing the letter A (including all the ones that start with A). Have you tried a battery pull to see if it's some sort of glitch?

If you are on a BES, are doing a "lookup", could that enter in to your problem?

Default Issue searching contacts

I'm having the same problem. I'm a seasoned BB user and this is the first time I've come across something like this. The problem only arose today when I started creating new categories and started organizing my contacts accordingly directly in my blackberry. With all the filters unchecked, when I type 'b', for example, only the contacts that have been assigned a category show up. All others are no in view unless I scroll up to see them. It's very strange. I'm going to try backing up and restoring my contacts to see if this works. Does anyone have a solution to this issue?

I just found this thread and it seems to have worked!

"Have you tried going into your address book options, and changing the sort? i.e. if it is firstname, change to lastname. Save, then change back.
I'm wondering whether "refreshing" the contacts data in this way will help"

I have tried re-sorting my contacts but it did not correct the contact search ability for me.

Also I noticed that if I edit a contact, it seems to keep it in a list seperate from the rest of the stored contacts, and it is only these edited ones which are shown in my searches. So, in order to not have to scroll through all of the contacts, I have to edit each contact that I want to be able to access quickly.

Any other suggestions?

Default i have the exact same issue- very weird

i just had the exact same problem - developed this morning

here is a post I put on the 8100 forum describing the exact problem - it sounds exactly like yours - i have over 3000 entries
I am also a seasoned b-berry user- all my settings are correct - and YES this happened right after i performed category maintenance( deleting some categories )
ANY IDEAS??

here is my post with examples of the problem
---------------------------------
All of a sudden the 'find' function doesnt work properly

here is a breakdown
1) I know the address book entries are there as I can see them when I scroll down manually
2) when I type 2-3 letters of the desired search name i get all entries matching those letters
3) when I continue to type more letters the desired search results from address book 'disappear' even though they match the 'find' criteria

EXAMPLE
when searching for 'halpern' in address book

entering find : hal

displays names beginning with
* gal
* hal

HOWEVER
entering find : halp ( adding 'p')
severely LIMITS results
(* in this case not Halpern but only an entry "Galpert')

it makes no difference whether i search by last name or first name

did not change anything on the blackberry other than deleting a few category entries . This problem seems global unrelated to the deletion of categories since entires unrelated to those categories are affected

options under address book and options/language seem to be correct

would appreciate any informed feedback
by the way over 3000 entries in address book

Default this may help

I restored my JUST my address book from an earlier version ( 2 weeks ago ) and the problem was solved ( i lost 2 weeks of entries but not as big a deal for me as the original problem )

so its a corruption issue relating to the database not the OS since i didnt restore anything else- i hope this helps somebody

btw - all my original categories returned :(

i will not delete any categories until someone cracks this issue

I lost the search function in my Contacts after a sync... with Desktop Manager for Mac. Though I can see the contacts beginning with A, for example, entering the letter A shows, "No Contact." All the letters show the same return: nothing. After hours on the forum, scratching my head, restarting, re-syncing, re-sorting, and un-filtering I gave up and restored from the back up. Now I can search; I just can't sync. I shan't sync contacts again until someone figures this out.
