How do I delete unwanted themes from a 7105t using Desktop Manager 4.1?

Using DMgr. 4.0 they could be removed using the app loader, but this doesn't work for me with 4.1.

Also, is it necessary to remove excess themes from the BB before upgrading the BB to OS 4.1?

no it hasn't, its right on the blue bar along with user cp, ***, newposts , etc.

you can delete some from within options > theme. Also, some have to be uninstalled within options > applications or options > advanced options > applictions

Are those steps from desktop manager or from the 7105 itself? When I access the Themes in Settings on the BB my only options are Activate or Close.

go to options, applications. select the theme and select delete
