Smile BES on SBS2003

Please Login to Remove!

I presently have 2 servers, 1 BES and 1 SBS (Exchange server), is it possible to install the BES on the SBS server.

If so what problems can I expect.

Thanks

Yes its possible, but only if you're using BES SBE or BPS. Full blown BES is not supported on the same server as a mail server ... even though it generally works.

What problems can you expect? None, if you follow the installation guide for the version you're installing ... unless of course there are already existing problems in your environment.

What is BES SBE or BPS, and what is the difference to full blown BES (i believe i presently have full blown BES).
I only have 5 users so maybe I dont need full blown BES anyway ??

I have installed full BES on a 2003 SBS R2
I have only 15 BB users and to date have experienced zero problems
I run BES 4.1.5 (recently upgraded to 4.1.5)
I believe their is a howto on here and when followed to the letter results in a fully functioning system
Just to let you know it does work.

Thanks SP

I am running BES for Microsoft Exchange 4.1.5, if you can find the howto it would be appreciated.

My SBS 2003 cannot install R2 as i have WSUS 3 installed, but I cannot get it to operate correctly, and cannot uninstall either.

A little searching would give you these answers ... as would any of the links in my signature.

BPS (BlackBerry Professional Software)
BlackBerry Professional Software Express
BlackBerry SBE (Small Business Edition), is an older version of BES (replaced by BPS)... much like MS has Exchange and also Small Business Server.

If you only have 5 users, I'd recommend BPS ... the only thing you lose is the ability to use an Enterprise IM Client such as Sametime or Communicator ... all other normal IM programs like AIM, GTalk, etc will work.

If you already have BES, you'd be laying out more money for software that does less ... but it lets you install the software on the Exchange server and be supported. I suppose you might be able to sell your BES license to someone else, but I don't know if that is possible; I'm far from an authority on licensing.

When I purchased the BES (about 3 yrs ago) it was only $1100.00.

It was the only version available at that time.

I have a download of bpsx_414A, does this need licencing or will it use my existing licence ??

Each BlackBerry Server product needs an SRP and CALs. You may / may not be able to use what you have with this software ... I don't know; as I said, licensing isn't my strong point.

After checking on the server I now know I have BES SBE for Exchange 4.1.5.

Will that work on the SBS 2003 ?? or is the licence usable with BPS ??

It'll work on SBS2003; again ... licensing ... not my thing.

Don’t forget everyone’s favorite MDSS; and a few other GUI options within the Manager.

Oh please ... you consider MDSS a feature for someone considering BPS? I consider the the plague. I love finding installations with it ... and the admin installed it because they wanted MDS. sigh.

The "person" who install my BES server did install MDSS and SQL. I dont know why of if I even need these.

Why does something so simple need to be made so complicated ???

Well unless you have a remote SQL server then you kind of do need SQL...

MSDE is SQL, just the free version shipped from MS that RIM packages up with the BES installer.

Yes removing WSUS 3.0 is a real pain and somewhat impossible.
you actually need to redo (reinstall) the SBS to get WSUS 2.0 back then install the R2 components then upgrade to WSUS 3.0 (I learned the hard way)
I know this is off topic just responding to his post.
I would google for Gary's BES Install guide for SBS 2003

Thanks Guy's for your replies.

WSUS 3.0 is a pain and appears to be impossible to remove. (Any help, other than re-installing SBS as a loast resort, would be great)

I still dont understand why I need SQL for the BES.
